North Cornwall Tuition - Emily Lofthouse - Primary School Tutor - Phonics Specialist - Hiya! The lessons will be fun, face to face sessions.

I have been teaching and tutoring small groups in primary schools since 2005 and this year I have decided to take the plunge into full time tuition from my home. I will work in my lovely little classroom at my home in Longstone with small groups throughout the day and after school, focussing on the specific needs of the individual child. Each lesson will be one hour long and will include a range of different resources for a creative approach to learning. Having a strong background in phonics, I will also be running a variety of fun workshops for pre schoolers and their parents to get the best possible start to their learning journey. If you would like your child to have some extra help, please call or email me to arrange a chat and from there we can book a half hour trial session with your child. On a personal note, I love life in Cornwall with my husband, three children, two cats and two dogs. My children's hobbies take up a lot of my time but when I have a bit of time for me I love to walk or swim with friends and I'm really trying to love gardening too!

📚 Reading practice… but make it a game! 🎲✨

As a Maths and English tutor and a busy mum of 3 teenagers, I’m always looking for simple ways to make learning feel less like work and more like fun. 💛

This time it’s READING JENGA! 🧱📖

I’ve written words on the Jenga blocks using different colours for different reading abilities, so the game can easily be adapted to suit your child.

Then it’s simple…

🧱 Take turns pulling out a block
👀 Read the word on it
📖 Practise sounding it out if needed
😬 And try VERY hard not to knock the tower over!

You can even use the same game for spelling practice ✏️ — read the word, cover it up and see if your child can spell it correctly.

Games like this can take some of the pressure out of reading and spelling practice, while still giving children lots of opportunities to build their skills and confidence. 🌟

Learning doesn’t always have to happen with a pencil and a worksheet. Sometimes you just need a game you already have at home and a little imagination! 🙌

🎯 Maths practice doesn’t have to look like maths practice! 🎯

I’m a Maths and English tutor and a busy mum of 3 teenagers, so I know how valuable it can be to find simple ways to make learning feel more like play. 💛

This game is NUMBER BOND PONG! 🏓🔢

It’s super simple…

➕ Give your child a number bond to work out.
🧠 They calculate the missing number.
🎯 Then they have to get the ball into the cup with the correct answer on it!

It’s a fun way to practise those all-important number bonds while also adding a little challenge (and plenty of laughs!) 😄

Strong number bonds are one of those essential maths building blocks 🧱 — the more confidently children can recall them, the easier lots of other areas of maths can become.

And the best bit? You don’t need fancy resources or hours of preparation. 🙌

Sometimes the simplest games are the ones children enjoy the most. ❤️

💛 Dyslexia Awareness Day 💛

Dyslexia is something I come across regularly in my work as a tutor, and one thing I’ve learnt is that it can look so different from one child to the next. 🧠✨

Sometimes I’ll be chatting to a child who has the most brilliant ideas 💡 and can explain exactly what they’re thinking… but ask them to get those same thoughts down on paper and suddenly everything feels so much harder. ✏️

And that’s why it’s so important that we look beyond the spelling, the reading level or what’s written on the page.

There is often SO much effort happening behind the scenes. 💛

I’m currently doing a dyslexia course to deepen my understanding and learn even more about how I can support the children I work with 📚🥰 I’m really enjoying putting what I’m learning into practice and continuing to develop the way I support each individual learner.

Because every child deserves to feel that they can learn — they might just need a different route to get there. 🌱

🌈LITTLE LEARNERS – Learning Through Play! 🌈

Calling all home educating families! 🥰

Our Little Learners group is the perfect opportunity for young children to develop their early learning skills in a fun, relaxed and playful environment!

Through exciting games, hands-on activities and lots of play, we will explore:

🔢 Early Maths – Counting, numbers, shapes and patterns.

📚 Early Reading – Exploring letters, sounds and building confidence with early literacy.

✏️ Early Writing – Mark making, letter formation and getting ready to write.

🖐️ Fine Motor Skills – Lots of fun activities to strengthen little hands and develop coordination.

🎲 Learning Through Play – Games, creativity and hands-on fun to help little learners grow in confidence!

Our sessions are designed to make learning enjoyable, allowing children to explore, discover and develop new skills at their own pace. 💛
