North Cornwall Tuition - Emily Lofthouse - Primary School Tutor - Phonics Specialist - Hiya! The lessons will be fun, face to face sessions.

I have been teaching and tutoring small groups in primary schools since 2005 and this year I have decided to take the plunge into full time tuition from my home. I will work in my lovely little classroom at my home in Longstone with small groups throughout the day and after school, focussing on the specific needs of the individual child. Each lesson will be one hour long and will include a range o

f different resources for a creative approach to learning. Having a strong background in phonics, I will also be running a variety of fun workshops for pre schoolers and their parents to get the best possible start to their learning journey. If you would like your child to have some extra help, please call or email me to arrange a chat and from there we can book a half hour trial session with your child. On a personal note, I love life in Cornwall with my husband, three children, two cats and two dogs. My children's hobbies take up a lot of my time but when I have a bit of time for me I love to walk or swim with friends and I'm really trying to love gardening too!

🧮 Counting, ordering and writing numbers. Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Fractions, percentages and decimals. Symmetry, shape and volume. 🧮 These are just a few of the many topics we tackle here at North Cornwall Tuition.

There’s always a way to explain a concept in a way that each individual can grasp it. A game rarely hurts! 🌟

🐶 I’m not sure how helpful the Otti the dog is but, sometimes, it is a real ice breaker and she can have a lovely, calming effect on the children. She isn’t often allowed in but, a few of the children like to say hello before we get started! 🙂

🌞 In this insane heat, we have been getting out as much as possible (although we have often had to go back inside to escape the heat!) 🌞

All of the children have been amazingly resilient this week - they have just kept going and made the most of every session! 💕

🍦We have been working with money in a few of my tuition sessions lately. Setting up shops is always great fun and there is so much children can learn.🍦

We forget that children really need to use coins and notes to begin to understand the concept of money. 💴 So few children see cash these days!

🌟 Set up a lemonade stand or an ice cream shop over the Summer. Everyone will enjoy it and your children will learn so much! 🌟

As always, there is so much going on here at North Cornwall Tuition. Filling in the early gaps is so vital for ongoing learning. 💕

Counting, number formation and place value come first in the school curriculum but so often children don’t have time to get a really good grasp on these basics before being thrown into the next topic.

The majority of the students I see have big gaps right back here, at the beginning. 😢

It so so wonderful to see their confidence bloom when these gaps start to fill and so much more falls into place. 💕

💕After a few days of terror celebrating my son’s 18th 🎂 by learning how to snowboard 🏂 (or trying to learn!) and skydive 🪂, I am definitely ready to get back to tuition!!
I hope you’ve all had a wonderful, sunny break and are ready to get back to it. It’s going to be a long term! 😬💕

🌟 We have been working on character profiles and story writing over the last couple of weeks here at North Cornwall Tuition. 🌟

👉 Working on description using games; the kind that we used to play on long car journeys before screens. Does anyone know, ‘The Minister’s Cat’ 🐈‍⬛?!

👉 Thinking about how to improve sentences by using description of emotions.

👉 Putting lots of grammar, handwriting and composition skills together to build really great stories to be proud of. 💕

As always, this week has been busy so far.

💕 My little learners have been using fine and gross motor skills through lots of experimentation with paint, outdoor games and all sorts of other play.

Gross motor skills:
👉 build strength in children’s whole bodies, legs, arms, shoulders and wrists
👉 improve coordination and balance
👉 are vital to establish resilience and skills for a variety of skills including writing

So many activities use gross motor skills but the bigger the movement the better.

👉 wheeling a hula hoop
👉 painting with water on a fence - big strokes!
👉 using big paper to draw and paint
👉 throwing & catching with a giant beach ball

These are just a few examples but you get the idea. 😀
