Literature as a Stepping Stone.

As one of our first-year modules, we will be looking at a collection of exciting and dynamic literature to enable us to reflect on how acclaimed works can inspire our own writing and style. In ‘Literature as a Stepping Stone’, we read a selection of texts in order to examine the various applications of authorial methods. This module affords students the opportunity to develop an appreciation of how a writer creates and manipulates language, form and structure, helping to establish a firm foundation upon which they can begin to develop their own authorial identity.

Workshops are a fantastic, collaborative way to develop an individual writing style. It benefits everyone involved in the process, offering a unique insight into the reception of your text in a safe and supportive environment. Feedback helps you to shape your work so that it conveys all that you hoped. And offering that feedback yourself is a fantastic way to explore the impact of a text and, in doing so, develop your own practice as a reflective practitioner.

Clare Owen’s work has been published in magazines and anthologies, and she regularly reads her work at literary events and festivals. She also co-writes and performs with an ensemble called 'Riot of the Freelance Mind.' Her first YA novel, Zed and the Cormorants was published in April 2021 (Arachne Press). Last June, it not only won the Holyer An Gof Young Adult award, but Clare was also awarded the Ann Trevenen Jenkin cup. The scheme was established and is organised by Bards of Gorsedh Kernow to promote books about Cornwall, set in Cornwall or in Cornish (Kernewek). Clare has helped to design one of our first modules: Core Elements of Narrative. We are delighted to have her on board and look forward to seeing what you can create with her guidance.
