Earlier this week Blyth STEM Hub, supported by the Reece Foundation, welcomed a group of year 12 students from St Benet Biscop.

The students were given an engaging presentation at Port Training Services on the Port of Blyth's position as a major offshore support base and the growing opportunities within the port. This followed by an introduction to the TEXO group by Alan Conway, Managing Director of TEXO Port Services.

Alan then led the group on a fantastic tour of TEXO's facilities and the port, where they enjoyed learning about the sea plough and other offshore machinery. We'd like to say thank you to Alan for making this possible!

A year 12 group from Excelsior Academy in Newcastle were the latest students to visit the STEM Hub and discover the exciting renewable energy developments happening right on their proverbial doorstep.

The group toured the Port, visiting some of the fantastic Engineering companies based there and followed that up with a visit to the Emerson Cavitation Tunnel the research centre developed by Newcastle University to test the effectiveness of propeller design. They had a great presentation from the centre Lead Lecturer - Dr Simon Benson - and his colleagues.

The event finished with a session with Advanced Blade Repair Services and a climb of the fantastic training wind turbine that the Port of Blyth has erected at the Bates Terminal - part of a series of interventions designed by the STEM Hub to help young people better understand the opportunities for them in the renewable energy, engineering and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Kathleen Perry, Post-16 Progress Leader at Excelsior said "Excelsior students were delighted to be outside of the classroom and considering the huge range of opportunities available for engineers in our region. This was a fantastic visit which gave students the opportunity to learn more about renewable energy and ask questions about different job roles; they have certainly started to think more about how their engineering qualification can lead them into specific career paths in the future."

It was great to host year 11 and 13 Bede Academy students at Blyth STEM Hub, hosted by the Port of Blyth and supported by the Reece Foundation.

The students were all keen STEM learners and took part in a fantastic Engineering and Renewables week, where they experienced 4 days of workshops, presentations and tours from some of the biggest engineering and renewable energy companies in the North East.

We are grateful for the amazing support of the event from Britishvolt, Equinor, TEXO, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, Tharsus, Newcastle University, Port of Blyth, Port Training Services, Advanced Blade Repair Services, Blyth Tall Ship, Northumberland College and Newcastle College

Andrew Thelwell - Principal at Bede Academy said "The students were really impressed by the quality and range of opportunities that the businesses were creating and were excited by the possibilities that they held for them. Thanks so much for the inspirational message you all gave!"
