REMEMBERING HELEN COX (81)
Rest in Peace

It’s with sadness we heard of the death of local woman, Helen Cox, who sadly passed away on Tuesday 18th May 2021, aged 81.

Helen was a much loved and well known Blantyre lady and this post hopes to reach out to everybody who knew her. As a young girl, she was brought up in the Village area of the town and later lived in Myrtle Street for many years.

Many people will know her as an outgoing, professional and caring teacher at St Joseph’s Primary School, where she taught for a long time. Even when she retired, she did some stand in teaching at other schools.

Later in life, Helen battled Alzheimers for a number of years and during the last three years of her long life, was under the great care and charge of the wonderful nurses at Avonbridge Care Home in Hamilton. Thanks are also extended to the kindness of Elizabeth Richardson who cared for Helen during her illness before going to the home. They were dear friends for many years.

Our thoughts go to her brother George in London, her nephews and sympathies extend to everybody who felt this loss. Funeral details are known and will take place at St Joseph’s Chapel at 11am on Wednesday 26th May 2021.

Rest in Peace Helen.

This is Canon John.C Battel who had the honour of being East Kilbride’s first Parish priest in 400 years. The priest endeared himself to the hearts of the newcomers to St Brides Parish in East Kilbride picking up the post in 1946 until 1952.

He then left for Blantyre and is pictured here in 1955 giving a Latin mass in the St Joseph’s School Hall.
