To all of our fellow childminders..

If any of you are feeling a little stressed with all the recent changes I just wanted to say we’re right there with you ♥️

Making tax digital, the removal of the 10% wear and tear, new safer sleeping requirements and the new screen time guidance. There seems to be new changes every other week and we’re all having to adjust accordingly.

It feels like we’re all being pushed, pulled and squished into a box of expectations and it’s a little suffocating to say the least!

Childminders have always been known for their uniqueness! We have lots of childminders in our area and we’ve always encouraged people to “shop around”. See what’s on offer and seek out the setting that speaks to you. We are all different and that’s exactly how it should be!

Lately it seems they just want us all to be more like nurseries and it feels like we’re being stripped of our individuality which is so upsetting. That cosy, warm and homely feeling of our setting feels like it’s slowly slipping from our grasp.

If you feel a little deflated, confused, stressed or like you’re just continuously processing.. just know you’re not alone in those feelings. We’re in this together ♥️

We enjoyed sensory, exploratory play ice, tools, textured objects, light-up blocks this weekend, this kind of play offers lots of developmental benefits for young children 🌟

1. Sensory development
• Experiencing cold, wet, hard, smooth, and textured materials helps children process sensory information.
• Supports sensory integration, which is especially valuable for children who seek or avoid certain sensations.

2. Fine motor skills
• Using tongs/scoops strengthens hand muscles, grip, and coordination.
• These skills are essential foundations for writing, dressing, and self-care later on.

3. Cognitive development & problem-solving
• Children experiment with cause and effect (ice melting, objects sinking or fitting).
• Encourages curiosity, prediction, and early scientific thinking: “What happens if…?”

4. Concentration and focus
• This kind of open-ended play naturally promotes deep concentration.
• Children often stay engaged for long periods because they control the activity.

5. Language development
• Offers rich opportunities for vocabulary:
• Cold, melt, scoop, freeze, sink, float, smooth, hard
• Adults can extend learning by narrating actions or asking open-ended questions.

6. Emotional regulation
• Sensory play can be very calming and grounding.
• Helps children regulate emotions, particularly when they feel overstimulated or unsettled.

7. Creativity and imagination
• There’s no “right way” to play—children invent their own ideas and stories.
• Light-up blocks and loose parts encourage imaginative thinking.

8. Independence and confidence
• Children make their own choices and test ideas, building confidence and autonomy.
• Success comes from exploration, not adult-led outcomes.
