Isolate, Isolate, Isolate

No I’m not talking about locking yourself away from society for a week, I’m talking about isolation exercises, I’m not saying you replace compound movements with isolation exercises, more we should use isolation exercises to compliment compound movements in our training routines.

What are isolation exercises?
Simply they are movements which target a specific muscle group, usually during these type of movements only one joint is moving.

What are the benefits?
Isolating a muscle allows us to maximise growth by forcing the targeted muscle to move the entire load by itself without the assistance of supporting muscle groups and joints.

Isolation exercises can also help us to train around injury’s by training one muscle without requiring assistance from the injured one.

Some of my favourite isolation exercises are:

- Cable Flyes (Chest)
- Single Arm Machine Row (Back)
- Side Lateral Raise (Delts)
- Preacher Curls (Biceps)
- Tricep Pushdowns (Triceps)
- Single Leg Leg Extension (Quads)
- Lying Hamstring Curls (Hamstrings)

Food Preparation:

Slow cookers are brilliant for those of us short on time, they allow us to batch cook with little to no prep required, just turn it on before work and come home to hot tasty food, no stress involved.

One of my personal favourites, especially as we move into the colder months, are stews and casseroles, a good option for getting in a healthy serving of proteins and vegetables.

Slow cookers are also surprisingly energy efficient and are cheaper to operate than an oven or hob, which is ideal in todays world of rising energy costs.

Intensity:
We’ve all been there at one point or another, you’ve hit a plateau with your training, your workouts have become stale and you’re not growing as much as you hoped you would.

At this point it’s time to ditch the typical 4x10 and add some intensity.

There are numerous plateau busting techniques we can add to our training to force some growth, potentially the most common tactic used are supersets.

Supersets are a pair of movements performed with little to no rest in between and will fundamentally increase metabolic stress within the muscle and therefore promote growth, increase the peak hormonal response during training as well as allowing us to save time whilst still doing the work, and perhaps the best perk of supersets is the skin splitting pumps they provide.

There are two types of supersets we can utilise:

An Antagonistic Superset: back to back movements of opposing muscle groups, for example Chest & Back or Triceps & Biceps.

An Agonistic Superset: back to back movements of the same muscle group, which allows us to really fatigue a muscle group.

Gymtimidation
Often referred to as Gym Anxiety is very real and can affect anyone, in fact it affects 30% of all gym goers.

What is it?
- Anxious about how you look in the gym.
- Scared of being judged on your abilities.
- Worried about your performing an exercise or using a machine incorrectly.
- You get nervous if the gym is too crowded.

Gym anxiety can seriously hamper someone’s fitness goals, harm motivation and even stop progression all together.

What to do ?
- Familiarise yourself with the gym, take a tour / induction.
- Plan your sessions effectively.
- Go with friends or take part in a class.
- Hire a trainer, a trainer can actually help you feel more comfortable in the gym by teaching you how to plan your sessions, perform exercises correctly and will make you feel comfortable in your surroundings.
