❗️Cold Water Shock Can Affect Anyone❗️

Even on warm days, open water can be surprisingly cold.

Cold water shock can affect anyone, even strong swimmers, making it difficult to control breathing and stay calm.

As part of Drowning Prevention Week, our swimmers have been learning the importance of staying calm, floating and controlling their breathing if they unexpectedly enter the water.

Understanding the risks and knowing what to do in an emergency can help save lives.

The Met Office has forecast rising temperatures this week, with parts of the UK reaching 28°C towards the weekend.

With exams finishing and the school term coming to a close, NOW is the time to talk to your teenager about water safety.

Worried they won’t listen? This guide shows you how to say it so they will.

Don’t miss the conversation that matters most.

🩵 Water Safety In Action 🩵

This weekend our swimmers have been learning important water safety skills as part of Drowning Prevention Week.

Across all stages, children have been discussing how to stay safe in and around water, including:

🛟Swimming in safe places
🛟Swimming with an adult
🛟What to do if they unexpectedly enter the water
🛟How to stay calm and float
🛟How to get help in an emergency

Our older swimmers have also been practicing treading water, shouting for help and learning how to help safely from the side using shout, signal, reach and throw rescues.

We’re incredibly proud of all of our swimmers for taking part and learning skills that could one day save a life.

🩵 Stop and Think
🩵 Stay Together
🩵 Call 999
🩵 Float

Keep an eye on our page this week as we share some of the important water safety messages our swimmers have been learning.

🛟🩵Water Safety Matters🩵🛟

Like many across the UK, we have been deeply saddened by the recent open water tragedies reported over the past few days. Our thoughts are with all of the families and communities affected.

Unfortunately, every year when the warmer weather arrives, we see an increase in incidents around open water. Rivers, lakes and reservoirs can look inviting – but they often carry hidden dangers, even for strong swimmers.

Cold water shock, strong currents and sudden changes in depth can affect anyone, regardless of swimming ability.

We believe swimming lessons are about more than learning strokes. Water safety Education saves lives.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be supporting drowning prevention week and sharing important safety information with our swimmers and families.

Please take a moment to watch this important message from the RNLI and talk to your children about staying safe around water.
