It is always nice to do a lesson outside, so we went out to learn about compass points in the sunshine. In Year 2 pupils learn the 4 compass points and in Year 3 we build on that to learn the 8 compass points. We used chalk to draw what we needed then gave instructions. The pupils needed to understand the compass points they had drawn in chalk, then move in that direction. They supported each other, developed oracy skills and practised using the compass points. A very enjoyable Geography lesson.

To launch our annual Harvest Appeal we were very lucky to have visitors from Blackburn Foodbank visit Cedars Primary School.

They spoke to all the pupils in school and this year we have been asked to bring in TINS OF SOUP. All donations are welcome.

If you are able to help please send donations in with your child. Last year the foodbank helped 11,500 people in Blackburn and Darwen.

Year 1 have been busy getting active in their learning this week! We have been moving our bodies in every lesson to help us learn and remember new skills. In Science, we enjoyed going outside for some bird spotting. To strengthen our hands for handwriting, we took part in a fun Doh Disco session. In Geography, we played an energetic running game to help us identify the countries of the UK. During Art, we developed our sculpting skills by creating wonderful play dough penguins. In PE, we used our travelling skills while taking part in a variety of fast-paced and exciting games.

Year 5 enjoyed the great outdoors this week during their visit to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Mill Hill. The children had the opportunity to build and assemble canoes, carry them to the canal, race against one another, and use their navigation skills to follow directions. They truly did the school proud by demonstrating excellent determination, resilience, and teamwork throughout the day.

This week in science, year 5 have been continuing their investigations in to the properties of material. We started off by predicting the thermal insulation properties of everyday materials. Keeping are variable the same, we continually monitored the lowering of the temperature of water in our beakers (surrounded by insulation material) with a thermometer. We were surprised that felt was not a highly insulation material. However, we mostly predicted correctly that tin foil would be our most insulation material.

An excellent lesson on communication this week in 3W. The pupils were directing each other from one area to another. If you can't see and you can't use touch to direct each other then your speaking and listening skills need to be working at 100%! The pupils developed their use of language throughout the lesson and realised how important it is to listen to each other closely. At the end of the lesson we discussed good teams and how listening is just as important as speaking. Well done 3W.
