Students often ask me:
“How many quotes do I need to remember for GCSE English?”

But honestly, they’re asking the wrong question.
A much better question is:
“What can I actually say about this quote?”
Because that’s where the marks are.

GCSE English isn’t about collecting as many quotes as possible. It’s about understanding them, analysing them and being able to explain their significance clearly.

I’ve seen students memorise dozens of quotes and still struggle to achieve the grades they want because they haven’t been taught how to explore them in depth.

The students who make the most progress are the ones who learn to ask better questions:
✔️ What does this reveal about the character?
✔️ Why has the writer chosen this word?
✔️ What effect does it create?
✔️ What is the writer trying to communicate?

Make sure your child is asking the right questions to achieve the grades they want.

Small groups offer something really powerful: discussion.

Students hear other ideas, learn from different interpretations and realise they’re not the only one with questions.

Because the groups are small, students still receive personalised support — but they also benefit from the energy and insight of the group.

It’s the best of both worlds.

A lot of students think the difference between a Grade 5 and a Grade 9 is intelligence.
It usually isn’t.

The biggest differences are often:
✅ Structure
✅ Exam technique
✅ Confidence
✅ Understanding what examiners are looking for
These are all skills that can be taught.

Strong analysis doesn’t mean writing more.
It means zooming in more carefully.

Instead of just spotting a quote, students need to ask:
What is the key word?
What does it suggest?
How does it affect the reader?

That’s where marks are made.

Did your child bring home a disappointing school report this term?

It’s completely natural to panic when you see a target grade, teacher comment or end-of-year assessment that isn’t what you were hoping for.

But one report does not define your child.

What matters is this:
✔️ Are they improving?
✔️ Do they know what they need to work on?
✔️ Do they have a clear plan moving forward?

Progress isn’t always linear, and September offers a fresh start.

One of the biggest misconceptions about GCSE English is that you’re either naturally good at it... or you’re not.

But that’s simply not true.

English isn’t about being born a “good writer.”

It’s about learning the skills, understanding what examiners are looking for, and practising those skills consistently over time.

I’ve seen students go from feeling completely overwhelmed by English to achieving grades they never thought possible.

Not because they suddenly became “good at English” overnight.
Because they learnt the skills.
And skills can be taught. đź’ś

Did you know that 50% of the GCSE English Language marks come from writing?

That’s right. Half of the marks available in one of the most important GCSE subjects come from a student’s ability to turn a blank page into a description, story, speech, article or letter.

And for many students, that’s exactly where confidence disappears.

Strong writing isn’t about being “naturally creative”. It’s about understanding how to:
✔️ structure ideas
✔️ engage a reader
✔️ adapt writing for different purposes
✔️ write with confidence under pressure

These are skills that take time to develop, practise and refine.

That’s why September is the perfect time to start.

My small-group English courses are designed to build confidence, strengthen writing skills and help students feel fully prepared for the challenges ahead.
