Will it sink or will it float? 🌊

This is one of those questions that sounds simple - until you are actually standing at the water tray with a toy car in one hand and a metal teapot in the other, and suddenly nothing is certain!

Our children at Blossom Barn HBO have been investigating floating and sinking - and the discoveries were brilliant.

This supports:

🌍 Understanding the World - forces, materials and how things behave
πŸ”¬ Early science - prediction, testing, observation and drawing conclusions
πŸ”’ Mathematical language - heavy, light, full, empty, more, less
πŸ’¬ Communication - discussing predictions and explaining what they noticed
🧠 Critical thinking - being surprised and revising ideas

Porridge. Made from scratch. Over an open fire. In the woods. πŸ”₯🌿

Forest School cooking is one of those experiences that children talk about for weeks. Recently our little ones have been making porridge over a real campfire - and the concentration, the pride and the absolute delight at eating something they made themselves is something truly special.

This is real-world learning at its most powerful.

This supports:

🍎 Health and Self-Care - understanding where food comes from and cooking from scratch
πŸ’ͺ Physical development - stirring, pouring, handling tools safely
🌍 Understanding the World - fire safety, the natural environment and seasonal cooking
🌟 Personal, Social and Emotional - independence, pride and shared experience
πŸ’¬ Communication - following instructions and describing what they observe

Helmet on. Feet up. And away they go! 🚲

Our balance bike sessions at Blossom Barn HBO are one of the highlights of the week - and it is easy to see why. The look of pure concentration followed by absolute delight when it all clicks is something we never get tired of seeing.

This supports:

πŸ’ͺ Physical development - balance, coordination and core strength
🌟 Personal, Social and Emotional - confidence, persistence and resilience
🌍 Understanding the World - movement, speed and direction
πŸ’¬ Communication - sharing excitement and encouraging each other

At Forest School recently, we collected sticks on our walk - and when we got back to Blossom Barn HBO, something wonderful happened. We added ribbons, and suddenly those sticks became the most magical wands. 🌈

Watching the children run, twirl and wave their ribbon wands against the sky was pure joy. But as always at Blossom Barn, there was so much more going on beneath the surface.

This supports:

πŸ’ͺ Physical development - gross motor skills, coordination and spatial awareness
🎨 Creative expression - colour, movement and imaginative play
🌍 Understanding the World - wind, movement and cause and effect
❀️ Personal, Social and Emotional - joy, freedom and confidence outdoors
πŸŒ€ Schema play - trajectory: watching things move through space

Today is World Ocean Day πŸŒŠπŸ’™ and we are celebrating all things ocean at Blossom Barn!

From water play and ocean animal exploration to conversations about our incredible planet, we love using awareness days like this to open up the world to our little ones. Our oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth - and it is never too early to start caring for them.

This supports:

🌍 Understanding the World - habitats, animals and environmental awareness
πŸ’¬ Communication and Language - new vocabulary around ocean life
πŸ‘‹ Sensory exploration - water play and investigation
πŸ”¬ Early science - floating, sinking and properties of water

From tiny caterpillar to beautiful butterfly - we have had a front row seat to one of nature's most extraordinary shows! πŸ¦‹

Our children at Stansted have been watching in wonder as their butterflies completed their life cycle right here in our setting. The moment a butterfly emerges is one of those early years experiences that stays with a child forever.

And inspired by all those wonderful wings, our little ones also brought the Very Hungry Caterpillar to life with their own paintings - each one as unique and colourful as the children who made them. πŸ›πŸŽ¨

Watching, waiting, wondering and creating - this is science and art at their most magical.

This supports:

🌍 Understanding the World - life cycles, living things and change over time
πŸ’¬ Communication and Language - new vocabulary, storytelling and describing observations
❀️ Personal, Social and Emotional - patience, wonder and empathy for living things
πŸ”¬ Early science - observation, prediction and discovery

There is something truly magical about watching children lose themselves in the woods. 🌿

Recently our Pre-School children at Takeley headed out to Forest School and got busy building dens, exploring the natural environment and making memories we know they will carry with them for years.

Den building is so much more than it looks. Every stick placed, every decision made, every moment of teamwork is a learning opportunity unfolding in real time.

This supports:

πŸ’ͺ Physical development - strength, coordination and spatial awareness
🧠 Creative thinking - design, problem-solving and imagination
πŸ’¬ Communication and Language - negotiating, planning and discussing ideas
❀️ Personal, Social and Emotional - cooperation, resilience and confidence
🌍 Understanding the World - the natural environment and how things connect
