â iGAS
iGAS disease refers to invasive Group A Streptococcal disease, a serious and potentially life-threatening infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus, or GAS) when it invades parts of the body that are normally sterile, such as the blood, muscles, or lungs.
âKey Points about iGAS:
Forms of iGAS include:
Necrotizing fasciitis ("flesh-eating disease")
Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS)
Bacteremia (bloodstream infection)
Pneumonia, especially in severe cases
Symptoms vary by the form, but may include:
Sudden severe pain
High fever
Swelling and redness
Confusion, dizziness
Rapid progression to shock or organ failure
Transmission:
GAS is spread through respiratory droplets or skin contact. While most infections cause mild illnesses (like strep throat), iGAS occurs when the bacteria enter normally sterile sites.
Risk factors:
Open wounds or surgical incisions
Chronic illnesses (diabetes, cancer)
Immunocompromised states
Recent viral infections (like flu or chickenpox)
Treatment
âĻ..âĻ..âĻ.....
âĸImmediate hospitalization
âĸIV antibiotics, often penicillin and clindamycin
âĸSurgical intervention in cases like necrotizing fasciitis
Prevention includes good hygiene, timely treatment of strep infections, and close monitoring of wounds or post-surgical site.
