The 3 biggest challenges facing schools and SENCOs around SEMH right now?
They are ๐
1. Recruitment and retention of skilled teachers, teaching assistants and pastoral staff to work with pupils with ever-higher SEMH needs.
2. Targeting the right intervention to support the right pupil at the right time. (Without all three aspects perfectly lined up, your SEMH input is unlikely to achieve success. It's about more than just what intervention you're using.)
3. Early identification - not just of children's needs, that's just the starting point, but of practical support strategies for teaching staff to actually use.
If we can address all three of the above in school, we can finally get some traction supporting our pupils with SEMH needs.
๐ค But... How do we get this right?
That's where you need the advice from an experienced, well-informed SENCO like Abigail Hawkins - also known as the SENsible SENCO.
And the answers - in all honesty - aren't going to fit into a social media post.
But... you can listen to my whole conversation with her for FREE in this week's School Behaviour Secrets podcast, where Abigail talks through these issues in detail... and explains what schools need to be doing to address them.

Here's a powerful, step-by-step technique for helping students who have difficulties with anger, but lack awareness of their own emotions.
You know - the sort of kids who don't know they're angry until it's too late.
๐ Draw the outline of a gingerbread man on a piece of paper
๐ Ask your student to identify where in their body they feel physically different when they get angry - get them to draw circles on the gingerbread to show this
๐ For some pupils it will be their head, or their stomach, or their fists - everyone's different so there's no right or wrong answer here
๐ Then spend some time talking about how it feels physically different
Now, when they're in class, and you see them looking unhappy or frustrated:
โ Don't ask them, "Are you okay?"... because we've already established this pupil has difficulty sensing their emotions, and they may not actually know the answer.
โ
Instead, ask them, "How's you're head?" (Or stomach, or fists, or wherever they highlighted on their gingerbread man.)
โญ๏ธ Because we know they have awareness of these physical sensations prior to an outburst.
Now you've got the information you need to be proactive and help them regulate if need be... before those feelings become too intense and you get an anger outburst.
This is just one strategy from my conversation with Nicola S. Morgan on the School Behaviour Secrets podcast this week. The interview is laser focused on helping kids manage their anger successfully in school (and life!)
So, if you're working with students with anger management issues, and want more in-depth strategies and insights, click here and listen for FREE ๐

There's a specific group of autistic pupils who tend to have their needs overlooked in schools - and the all have the same thing in common...
They're girls.
That's because they often mask their needs - meaning they watch their peers and mimic their behaviours to fit in - so they go "under the radar" in our classrooms.
But that doesn't mean they don't have to manage the same sensory, social, language and cognitive differences as boys.
The result can be low self-esteem, anxiety, self-harm, depression and worse.
So, in the classroom, it's important we don't take our student's behaviours at face value... and we develop tools and systems for identifying our pupils' needs, even when they're not immediately obvious to us.
That we learn to spot the kids who internalise as well as externalise their needs.
If you want to know more about the implications for schools, check out my interview with expert Nicola Durant, who shares her expertise both as a educational professional AND a parent of an autistic girl.
