It was wonderful to welcome Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, to University College Birmingham yesterday. He spent time talking with our amazing students, who are studying everything from engineering apprenticeships to access to higher education courses, about their future, as well as his own personal journey. They got so much from it, thank you for inspiring them to go for their goals!

Angela Hartnett leads University College Birmingham students for a surprise guest lecture. 25/06/2024

Recently, we had the honour of hosting celebrity chef Angela Hartnett for a special guest lecture. Angela guided our first-year Culinary Arts Management students in crafting a delicous gnocchi and lamb shoulder ragout, sharing her invaluable insights and sparking their culinary creativity. 🍽️✨

The visit maked the arrival of new equipment for our competition kitchen, provided by Hobart, who specialise in commercial kitchen equipment.

Did you know King Charles III has not one but two birthdays?! While he will officially celebrate his 75th birthday on 14 November, today he will receive an early celebration at Trooping the Colour, also known as the King’s Birthday Parade. 👑🎈

Fun fact: our former Assistant Dean of Bakery, Dawn Gemmell, was commissioned to make a huge cake for King Charles' 40th birthday. The iced fruit and marzipan masterpiece was adorned with some of King Charles’ favourite things - music, polo, architecture, as well as the Prince’s Trust initiatives - and tipped the scales at 30kg (equivalent to two car tires). It took centre stage at a memorable celebration in Birmingham back in 1988. The bottom two tiers were shared with guests...but King Charles took the top tier home!” 🍰✨

The sun is shining on our newest campus building today ☀️

In fact, this building is far from new. The iconic 1920s James Cond print works building is steeped in history and has recently been transformed, bringing it up to modern standards, all while incorporating sustainable and energy-efficient features.

Now known as University College Birmingham’s Centre for Sustainable Construction, this facility plays a vital role. Learners are trained on key skills that support employers and supply chains, all within an environment that promotes sustainable construction practices. As demand for these skills grows, our centre will empower the next generation to create structures that stand the test of time and contribute to a more sustainably-minded future workforce. 🏗️🌿🌎

🌍 Happy Earth Day! 🌿 At University College Birmingham, we take sustainability seriously. From our campus to our curriculum, we’re dedicated to making a positive impact. Here are some of our priority areas and key targets:

• Reducing our carbon footprint: we’re actively working to reduce our electricity, gas, and water consumption. Every small step counts! 💡💧
• Recycling and waste initiatives: we’re building on our recycling efforts to minimise waste. Let’s keep our planet clean! ♻️
• Green spaces for biodiversity: we’re increasing green spaces to support local biodiversity. 🌿🦋
• ISO Environmental Management Standards: we’re working towards gaining ISO Environmental Management Standards. 🌏🌱
• Community engagement: we’re part of the West Midlands Sustainability Roadmap, collaborating with other educational institutions and businesses. Together, we’re shaping a sustainable future! 🤝
• Championing local suppliers: our very own Restaurant at Birmingham College of Food supports the local community and reduces transportation impact. 🌿🍅

We know there is so much more work to do, but it’s good to reflect on the journey so far!

WINNERS FOR SECOND YEAR!

A huge congrats to our very talented Level 3 Professional Cookery college student Lauren Smith, who has been crowned winner of this year’s British Culinary Federation Student Chef of the Year competition!

Senior lecturer Martin Hodgetts said: "It has been a pleasure mentoring Lauren for the competition. She has demonstrated her dedication and skill throughout practising and on the day, and I am extremely proud of her achievement. It is well deserved and hopefully one of many successes."

Lauren’s triumph follows Professional Cookery FdA undergraduate Louis Richards winning last year’s inaugural competition, launched to celebrate the UK’s upcoming stand-out chefs. Long may the winning streak continue!
