Toastmasters aims to provide our students a platform to build up your confidence in public speaking, communication & leadership skills.
At meetings, we usually have up to three prepared speeches (4-6 minutes each) and evaluations in the first half. Then there’s a snack break, and in the second half we do tabletopics. Tabletopics are short (1-2 minutes) impromptu speeches on often quite random topics, such as ‘why is a swamp the best place to live?’ or ‘you are the Queen. Tell us about...’ Everyone who speaks will get an evaluation and the best speakers, evaluators, and tabletopics speakers can win certificates.
Anyone can take roles at meetings, and the roles only last for that one meeting. The roles available are:
Speaker -does a prepared speech on any topic, lasting for 4-6 minutes
Evaluator -evaluates one of the prepared speeches, lasting for 2-3 minutes
Timekeeper -times all the speeches, both prepared and tabletopics
Grammarian -chooses a word of the day for people to use, spots nice uses of language, and counts filler words like ‘um’
Tabletopics master -prepares 10-15 tabletopic questions within one overall theme of their choice, to present as the tabletopics for that meeting
Tabletopics evaluator- evaluates all of the tabletopics speakers, lasting for 8-10 minutes
Toastmaster of the meeting- opens the meeting and welcomes the speakers on to the stage
To take any role, or for more information, message one of the committee members.
