🏋️Summer Camp Team Challenge: Who can pull the heaviest weight?
One of our favourite moments from our Bournville Summer Camp was this child-led engineering mission. The children worked in groups to plan, design, and build a machine that could lift or pull a heavy object, using real engineering ideas like:
- Speed-decreasing transmissions (including the super slow “snail” 🐌 transmission!)
- The lever principle
- Pulley systems
The best part was the learning that happened along the way. The children had to share ideas, take turns, test what worked, and keep improving when something did not go to plan. That builds so many life skills that go beyond engineering, including:
- Teamwork and communication (listening, taking turns, explaining ideas)
- Problem-solving and resilience (tweak, test, try again!)
- Confidence (presenting their design proudly at the end)
The winning team created a machine that combined all three engineering techniques into one impressive build, and they were so proud presenting it at the end. Tremendous job, young engineers 💡
