π Tuff Trays: Little Trays, HUGE Learning Opportunities! π
At Little Adventures Nursery, we LOVE a good tuff tray! π And while they might look like a simple tray filled with resources, for our children they can become anything they imagine!
Tuff trays provide incredible opportunities for open ended play, where there isnβt always one right answer or one way to play. Children can explore, experiment, create, problem-solve and, most importantly, take the learning in their own direction. π§ β¨
From messy sensory play and small world adventures to sorting pasta, exploring nature, caring for dinosaurs, investigating water and learning about our environment, the possibilities are endless!
π What are our children learning through tuff tray play?
π Sensory development β exploring different textures, temperatures, smells, sounds and materials.
π¨ Creativity & imagination β creating their own stories, worlds and ideas and using resources in their own unique ways.
π£οΈ Communication & language β sharing ideas, describing what they can see and do, learning new vocabulary and developing conversations with others.
π€ Social development β learning to share resources, negotiate, cooperate, take turns and develop friendships.
π§ Problem-solving & critical thinking β wondering βWhat will happen ifβ¦?β, testing ideas, making predictions and finding solutions.
π’ Mathematical development β counting, sorting, matching, comparing, measuring, recognising patterns and exploring size and quantity.
π± Understanding the world β exploring nature, animals, habitats, food, materials, communities and the world around us.
πͺ Physical development β scooping, pouring, squeezing, pinching, threading, grasping, transferring and developing those all-important fine motor skills.
π Literacy β using books and stories to inspire play, developing storytelling skills, recognising symbols and beginning to attach meaning to their creations.
π Confidence & independence β making choices, following their own ideas, taking risks, persevering when something doesnβt work and celebrating their achievements.
And perhaps most importantly, tuff trays give children the freedom to lead their own learning. β€οΈ
A tray doesnβt need to be perfect. It doesnβt need to look Pinterest worthy. The real magic happens when children get to touch, explore, move, investigate, create, imagine and discover.
Our practitioners carefully consider the resources they provide and the learning opportunities they can offer, but then we step back and allow the children to take the lead. π
Because sometimes the best learning happens when we simply give children the time, space and freedom to explore their own ideas. π
