Look to the skies this evening for something a bit special!
To mark the beginning of LGBTQ+ History Month, our clock tower Old Joe is lighting up in rainbow colours all this week 🌈
The month aims to recognise and celebrate the history, achievements and cultures of LGBTQ+ communities and individuals.
And we will be marking the month with a programme of events for staff, students and the wider community to join in https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/events/lgbt-history-month

Amazing!
Last term, we held our first 'Women in Computer Science (WiCS)' event. We invited two speakers, namely Eva (3rd year CS student) and Huipeng Chen (Assistant Professor) who spoke about their respective academic journeys. Eva highlighted her first year journey, and Huipeng provided students with fantastic narrative around cultural constraints, parent expectations within cultures as well as dealing with "being the outsider".
We also had WiSE and CyberWomen talking about their societies. Afterwards everyone enjoyed pizza within a relaxed environment, with peer mentoring amongst year cohorts taking place.
Here's to more of the same in 2025!
Welcome back everyone! We hope you had a restful break, and are looking forward to 2025!
That's it folks, 2024 is almost done!
A huge well done to all our students and staff this year - we've had study, exams, graduation, amazing showcases and events, and welcomed new and returning cohorts - you all now deserve a well earned rest!
The School of Computer Science, University of Birmingham will be closed until Thursday 2nd Jan 2025, but we just wanted to wish you all a very restful break over the festive season, and look forward to seeing you all in 2025 :-)
It's Chriiiiiiistmas!
The School of Computer Science held its annual tradition - the CS Christmas Lights Switch On last week, and as always it was a lovely celebration, of the festive period, but also all the hard work that our students and staff have put in over the last year.
We sang carols, ate mince pies, drank mulled wine and winter berries cordial, and cheered Aad, the Head of School, as he began the perilous task of safely placing Tux, the Linux penguin on top of the CS Christmas tree....
Please, take a moment to marvel in the videos of our sensational carol singing......
It really brings the School together, and we just wanted to wish everyone a restful break over the festive period, whatever your plans may be :-)

Meet uni friends Ben and Jonathan, two of our student entrepreneurs who have developed an innovative learning platform that combines AI and cutting-edge neuroscience to personalise study content.
StudyStash was created while revising for their second year Computer Science exams based on their own study experiences and aims to reduce exam stress, boost confidence and improve academic performance.
Now, with the support of the University's student start-up programme, the pair are rolling our a year-long, University-wide pilot of their programme.
Ben said: “The platform has evolved to provide everything students need to smash their exams. It’s like having a personal tutor on hand 24/7, learning from how you study and helping you to revise like a pro.”
The young entrepreneurs have also gained the support of high-profile alumni.
