Today we have heard the very sad news of the passing of Shihan Terry Bayliss.
A wonderful character whose dedication and teachings of aikido will be very sadly missed.
Shihan Reynolds held him in the highest regard and his influences will remain with us throughout our practice.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, students and to all who knew him.
I post the picture attached, for me the words epitomise the values that Shihan Bayliss brought to this wonderful art.

We take our skills for granted..now that’s a comment that may raise a few eyebrows!

I am often asked when teaching,
Can i see that again please.
Where did you place your feet?
Where do you put your thumb 🙂

We forget the struggles of students as we continue on our own path.

We can have back to basics nights, but then again what’s basic?
After years of training we naturally move off line, we draw, we step in, we constantly utilise the muscle memory built up of years of practice, refining our movements to become not only economic but more effective.
I have to remind myself constantly when teaching that, what we take as the obvious, is not apparent to everyone on the mat.
This equates to us rethinking our approach to teaching and evaluating our own technique…
Now they say that aikido has many spirals - maybe this is another:)

Some days we might not ‘feel’ like going to practice. Though at times we may truly be unable to - if we are sick, injured, or have family responsibilities- don’t misinterpret, these are all legit.
However, if we simply don’t ‘feel’ like it,
- go anyway.
Some days are just about showing up.
The practice may be far from perfect, just do the best and move carefully in the moment.
There is always something to learn even if we do not ‘get it right’.
Or…sometimes we may actually discover something, epiphanies surprise us - they often come unannounced.

Discipline, consistency, showing up when we do not want to is part of committing.
Make this a foundational habit.
When motivation is low, foster the mindset of consistent action. Practice it as a discipline, use it as a steady force.
Your teacher will quietly notice your consistency.
Your commitment, acknowledged.
Showing up and being present is what underlies all significant improvement.
Become inspired by the capacity.

Remember that for long term success, it is consistency - the steady, regular effort over time that is more effective than short bursts of extreme effort and intensity.

Sometimes the best advice is simple:
Have Discipline.
Be Patient.
Just show up.
