💙 Rescue Breaths ……A Skill Every Parent Hopes They’ll Never Need 💙

As parents, we spend so much time learning how to feed, settle and care for our babies, but would you know what to do if your child stopped breathing?

Rescue breaths are one of the most important skills taught in Baby First Aid. They can help get oxygen to a baby or child whose breathing has stopped and can quite literally buy precious time until help arrives.

The good news? They are simple to learn, practise and remember.

I truly believe that every parent, grandparent and caregiver should know the basics of infant and child CPR. Not because emergencies are common, but because confidence and knowledge can make all the difference if the unthinkable happens.

Hopefully you’ll never need to use these skills. But if you do, you’ll be so grateful you learned them.

💕 Because when it comes to our children, being prepared is one of the greatest gifts we can give them.

Just popping on with a gentle but important reminder for my lovely mums, dads out there 💛

With the current meningitis outbreak in Kent, I wanted to share a few signs to be aware of in babies and children.

This post is not to frighten anyone at all, but just to gently remind you what to look out for, because little ones can become poorly quite quickly and early help really does matter in this instance ✅

Please look out for signs in children such as:
✨ A high temperature
✨ Vomiting
✨ Headache
✨ Rapid breathing
✨ Being very sleepy, difficult to wake or floppy
✨ Pale blotchy or mottled skin
✨ A stiff neck
✨ Not liking bright lights
✨ Seizures
✨ A rash that does not fade when pressed

In babies, you might also notice:

✔️Refusing feeds
✔️A very high-pitched cry
✔️ Being floppy or unusually stiff
✔️ Being very irritable
✔️ A bulging soft spot

Symptoms can come in any order, and there may not always be a rash, so please ❌ DO NOT WAIT FOR A RASH ❌ before asking for help.

If your baby or child seems seriously unwell, or your gut feeling is telling you something just isn’t right, please seek help straight away ✅

Call 999 or go to A&E if they are very unwell, or call 111 for urgent advice.

And as I always say… you know your baby better than anyone ✅

Never worry about making a fuss or bothering anyone ❌

If you are concerned, we always want you to get your little one checked 💛

And please do remember that although there is a current outbreak in……meningitis is still rare 😅

• The mums of toddlers who climb everything
• The mums of teenagers navigating a whole new stage of motherhood
• The mums whose babies are now grown but still their babies forever

• The grandmothers who started it all
• The stepmums who love children as their own
• The adoptive mums whose love created a family
• The foster mums giving children safety and warmth

• The single mums carrying everything on their shoulders
• The working mums juggling a thousand things every day
• The stay-at-home mums whose work never stops

• The mums pregnant with their babies right now
• The mums preparing to meet their baby very soon

• The mums who held their babies for only a few precious moments
• The mums whose babies live forever in their hearts
• The mums walking the path of infertility and hoping for their miracle

• The mums doing it with grace
• The mums doing it exhausted
• The mums doing it imperfectly but with enormous love

Because motherhood isn’t about being perfect…
It’s about loving someone with your whole heart.

Happy Mother’s Day to every mother, in every form that motherhood takes. 💗

Love,
Caron

✨ Midwife Tip for Parents: Your Home First Aid Kit ✨

As a midwife, one of the simplest ways I see parents build confidence is by having a well-stocked first aid kit at home. You may not need it often, but when you do — you’ll be so glad it’s ready 💛

Here’s what I recommend keeping on hand for babies & young children:

🩹 Basics
• Plasters (various sizes)
• Sterile gauze pads
• Micropore or medical tape
• Antiseptic wipes or spray

🌡 Health essentials
• Digital thermometer
• Infant/child paracetamol or ibuprofen (age-appropriate)
• Saline drops or spray (for noses & eyes)

🔥 Skin & injuries
• Cling Film for burns
• Arnica or bruise cream
• Barrier cream (great for sore skin and small irritations)

✂️ Tools
• Small scissors
• Tweezers
• Disposable gloves

📝 Extra tip from me:
✔️ Keep everything in one clearly labelled box
✔️ Check expiry dates every 6 months
✔️ Store medicines up high and locked away

Having a first aid kit isn’t about expecting emergencies — it’s about feeling prepared and calm when little things happen 🤍

Save this post for later & share with another parent who might find it helpful ✨
