MPW Birmingham

MPW Birmingham MPW Birmingham is one of the UK's leading sixth-form colleges. Offering students high quality A leve

Each college within the MPW Group employs a common methodology that underpins our approach to teaching and learning:
● There is an absolute guarantee of fewer than 10 students in each A Level class
● Tutors are highly qualified to first or doctoral level and many are A level or GCSE examiners for the subjects that they teach
● MPW produces its own printed course materials for all major subject

s
● There is a broad range of over 40 subjects from which to choose. These may be studied over durations ranging from one term to two years in any combination to suit the individual student
● All courses are underpinned by a strong exam practice component from the outset. There are monthly revision tests taken in all subjects at every level. And, in the final year during which examinations are sat, there are additional weekly timed assignments - all taken under supervised exam conditions
● At MPW there is an unusually detailed progress reporting to parents. Test and homework results are available throughout a student’s course on the parent intranet, and as well as regular parent evenings there are detailed written reports on each subject five times per year
● Central to MPW’s methodology is respect for students as young adults. We insist on strict punctuality in the attendance of lessons and the submission of assignments but are otherwise free of many of the traditional school rules which teenagers often find restrictive. Tutors and students are on first name terms and we aspire to create an enjoyable, socially relaxed atmosphere in which students enjoy coming to college and working hard. ❄️College closure ❄️

We have reviewed the weather conditions across the region this morning and have decided to close the college today, Friday 9th January.

The decision has been taken following an early assessment of local conditions related to ice and snow and the widespread cancellation of public transport. We do not feel it is safe for staff of students to travel to and from college.

Due to the short-term nature of the closure, we will not be offering lessons online, but encourage all students to use the day for independent study and revision.

We expect to open again on Monday 12th January as usual, but will keep you informed via email and the college website.

MPW Birmingham has been ranked in the top 5% nationally for ALPS value added.

ALPS value added is a measure of student progress, which compares actual outcomes with expected grades based on students’ prior attainment. Ranking in the top 5% nationally means MPW Birmingham students have not only met expectations but exceeded them, often by a considerable margin.

This achievement reflects the outstanding dedication and commitment of both our tutors and students. It’s a testament to the collaborative effort and academic excellence that define MPW Birmingham.

Welcome to Birmingham!

Our international students have had a busy few days getting to know each other and settling into their new home.

During their induction sessions, they learned about the importance of attendance and staying focused in their studies. They were also introduced to the local GP, shown how to open a bank account, stay safe online, and travel safely around Birmingham and the rest of the UK.

All courses at MPW are underpinned by a strong exam practice component from day one.

Exams are a fundamental part of education, and to succeed, students must be properly prepared and feel fully confident when sitting them.

Our model of frequent, timed assignments and mock exams is designed to assess student performance, build knowledge, and refine essential exam skills. By regularly taking part in timed assignments under supervised conditions, the fear and stress of exams is gradually reduced. By the time the real ones come around, students feel calmer and more confident.

We know this method enables students to perform better in exams and achieve higher grades - allowing them to successfully progress to their desired next steps in education.

MPW alumni Michael said:
“The weekly tests under exam conditions, though daunting at first, were invaluable—not only did they help with honing exam techniques, but they also alleviated the stress of exams by instilling a level of familiarity with the exam process.”

Are you aiming for Oxbridge? 🎯

Since our founding in 1973, MPW has been dedicated to helping students gain admission to Oxford and Cambridge. In fact, supporting Oxbridge applicants was one of the core reasons our college was established.

Each year, we guide 20 to 30 students through the Oxbridge application process. Over the past two decades, we’ve supported nearly 700 applicants—many of whom have gone on to secure places at these world-renowned universities.

At MPW, aspiring Oxbridge students are automatically enrolled onto our comprehensive preparation programme. We recognise that every student’s journey is unique, and that applying to Oxbridge requires tailored support based on your chosen course.

As part of the programme, you’ll benefit from:

✅Specialist lessons focused on strengthening your application.
✅Seminar-style sessions, Oxbridge talks, and exclusive events.
✅Individual guidance on your personal statement, admissions tests, and interview preparation.

Whether you're applying for Engineering, History, or any other subject, our expert tutors will provide subject-specific support to help you stand out.

Congratulations to Hauwa who achieved A*A*AA yesterday. Hauwa is one of our NCUK International Foundation Year students and has won a place to study Architecture at the University of Liverpool. We wish all of our NCUK students the very best as they now progress onto their chosen university courses.

“My time at MPW was truly rewarding. The school provided a supportive and engaging environment, with small class sizes that helped me stay focused. My teachers were always approachable and ready to help, and my personal tutor supported me both academically and personally, ensuring I stayed on track. The teaching style and resources made learning enjoyable and effective — I don’t regret a single moment I spent there.”
