Abigail from Dovedale spent a morning at BOM [Birmingham Open Media], where she was filmed by BBC Midlands today for taking part in a project called 'Blueprint For Life'. Abigail was very confident in articulating her experiences this project has given her, which was aired the same day. This project has been funded from the Age Autism Society, with a selection of pupils from Dovedale taking part in art workshops during Well-being Wednesday, learning new skills of colour theory and digital art. The workshops have been led by our visiting digital artist Chloe Lawson, inspiring young people with autism to get creative and learn new skills.

Family Fund are delighted to announce that it is hosting an Information and Support day in Birmingham on Tuesday 31 January 2023 at Touchbase Pears, Selly Oak -10:30am to 2:30pm

There will be a number of other charities and organisations there to offer help and support to families in the area. Previously our information days have been invaluable to families and sector with all resources in one place.

Family Fund is the UK’s largest charity providing grants for families raising disabled or seriously ill children and young people. Last year, we provided over 150,000 grants or services worth over Β£48 million to families across the UK.

They provide grants for a wide range of items, such as washing machines, sensory toys, family breaks, bedding, tablets, furniture, outdoor play equipment, clothing and computers. It can be a struggle financially, emotionally and physically for families raising a disabled or seriously ill child, and these grants help break down many of the barriers families face, improving their quality of life and easing the additional daily pressures.

The pupils in D group at Dovedale got creative with a design challenge by making potato heads, using different natural and man-made materials. The objective was to use a range of materials, consider how the potato will stand up and how to join pieces together. The results were a fun collection of interesting heads! Well done D group!

On Thursday Year 11 pupils from Dovedale and Parkway visited London and The Tate Gallery, The Barbican Theatre and The Globe Theatre.

The staff and pupils travelled on the train and the underground, which for some was a new experience! The day was filled with lots of walking along the South Bank, taking in some of the famous sights, and exploring the collections and a theatre production at the venues. The pupils were a credit to our school with their exemplary behaviour and positive attitudes, the staff are very proud of them.

Thank you to all who supported on this long, but enjoyable day!

Ewan is raising money for Ward 18 at B*H in memory of his friend Connor. He would like to use the money raised to buy sensory lights for the ward.

They are not asking for large donations, they would rather lots of people make small donations of even just Β£1. The challenge will run until schools break up for Christmas so they will have time to purchase the projectors and deliver them to the oncology ward for the children and teenagers to enjoy over the Christmas period.

Please donate to help bring a smile to a child suffering from cancer this Christmas, and in memory of Connor’s caring giving nature.

Training & Outreach 06/12/2022

Subsidised THRIVE training for Birmingham schools – available for a limited time.

Thrive is a therapeutic approach to help support children with their emotional and social development. It is a whole-school approach based around, current studies of effective learning and current models of child development – in order to help the school to understand the needs being signalled by children’s behaviour. Key staff trained as Licensed THRIVE Practitioners within schools can carry out assessments of identified children’s social, emotional and behavioural needs which help to build an Action Plan of targeted strategies and activities to help children re-engage with learning and life.

The Thrive Approach is ideal for professionals working in education - individual schools, multi-academy trusts (MATs) and local authorities - social care and the health care sectors, those supporting families in the community, and also for parents and carers.

James Brindley Academy’s Licensed THRIVE Trainers will be running 1 x Adolescent Practitioner Course and 1 x Childhood Practitioner Course, commencing February 2023. All course places are generously subsidised by Birmingham City Council but are limited in numbers, therefore we advise that you secure a place as soon as possible.

James Brindley Academy

We work across 10 sites divided into 3 sectors: Dovedale; Hospitals, including home teaching; Northfield and Parkway. This section provides an overview of leadership and governance - for centre specific details, please visit the relevant sector pages.

James Brindley is a multi-sited, multi-provision special Academy that provides education for young people, aged 2-19, whilst either in hospital or unable to attend mainstream school due to their medical conditions, special educational needs or disability.

Our locations are spread throughout Birmingham and comprise: 7 hospitals (both physical and mental health); 2 teaching centres for young people with social, emotional and mental health conditions and an autism specialist centre. We also provide teaching in the home. On a daily basis we provide education for an average of 500 young people. Annually this equates to teaching approximately 2,500 young people, all with complex and varied needs. These young people may be placed with us through Birmingham’s referral route or come from across the UK and wider via their medical placement.

Many of our young people make exceptional progress in the face of significant personal challenges with physical or mental health. It is our primary role as educators to prioritise their academic studies but equally we recognise the importance of supporting their well-being and preparing them for their next steps. We believe that every young person deserves an education which enables them to be the best they can be.
