RBC Recorder students proving that not one, but two descant recorders can be played in tune. And that large recorders do sound particularly gorgeous - especially playing the music of William Byrd ❤️

What a great week! A trip to the Bate collection in Oxford to look at instruments, a lecture from the amazing renaissance scholar Adrian Brown on the instruments of the Schnitzer family, and a wonderful class on music with electronics from the fabulous Susanna Borsch. What lucky students! 🥰
We had an inspiring and uplifting day at RBC this week with recorder composer extraordinaire, Sören Sieg. Students were able to work on a broad selection of Sören's music, including selections from the beautiful Ukuvalelisa collection for solo recorder, as well as the Suite Siciliano with harpsichord and cello, and African Suite No 4 (snippet below!).

Wonderful opportunity today for our recorder players to work with Tabea Debus - Recorder, Eizabeth Kenny and Jonathan Rees. Thanks to the team at Worcestershire Early Music for making it happen!

A brilliant way to finish off the year at RBC. Recorders, bagpipes, keyboards, fiddles, viols, drums, singers, dulcian, trumpets playing music on the theme of War, Fire and Plague! What fun it was and thanks to the wonderful Jude Rees for masterminding the whole project and the gorgeous Aston Hall for having us.

Lucky recorder students working with the wonderful Emily Bannister this week on contemporary music!

We were incredibly lucky to have the fantastic musician Andreas Böhlen joining us last week from Switzerland. An intense two days of workshopping and masterclasses, covering music from Josquin to Schutz, Castello to Telemann and Phildor, as well as an incredibly inspiring concert. Many thanks to Andreas for sharing his enthusiasm, knowledge and wonderful musicianship with us. Here are a few snaps!

‘As an instrument of continual reinvention and innovation, its story has only just started…’ A refreshingly well-researched programme featuring our very own Estelle Langthorne 👏 and name checking Team Recorder / Sarah Jeffery, alongside the Dutch virtuoso Lucie Horsch, this is definitely worth a listen.

Wonderful class zoomed-in to the RBC recorder and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Historical Performance Department yesterday, with the French baroque expert Lisete Da Silva Bull. Loads of historical information and new things to think about, as our students prepare for their recitals and get used to playing live once more. Thanks Lisete!

Yesterday we very sadly lost the wonderful Ross Winters, who led our department for many years until he retired in 2012. So many recorder players were nurtured, shaped and informed by his teaching and leadership and he will be sorely missed. Ross, we salute you # #

Thinking of applying to us for entry in 2021? RBC are delighted to announce a new initiative for talented and dedicated Recorder players who also play another instrument to Conservatoire level and who want to pursue in-depth undergraduate performance studies on both instruments. The option recognises the changing and creative role that the Recorder plays in modern professional music making and how an in-depth knowledge of the instrument (and historical playing practices) can complement many other areas of musicianship and instrumental performance.
