“We did it as a community” - watch BCU Media Production graduate Skye Broad deliver her speech at this week’s graduation ceremony for the 👏🎓

Mission accomplished! 🧨
A group of graduates from had a once in lifetime experience on-set during filming for Tom Cruise’s latest action thriller Mission Impossible – Death Reckoning.
Tasked with marshalling the multimillion-dollar production, five BA Media Production graduates saw Birmingham’s Grand Central Station transformed into a working replica of Abu Dhabi airport, as seen in the movie.
Abi Rayner, one of the graduates employed as a marshal during the filming, said: “When BCU offered us the opportunity to work with a film crew, I had no idea what movie we were going to be working on.
“During the filming I was a location marshal, which involved setting up all the locations that were filmed in Grand Central, making sure everything was ready for the cast and crew to start filming.”
The placement, arranged through Birmingham City Council’s Film Birmingham team and BCU’s Institute of Media and English, was an unrivalled industry experience for the recent graduates.
“We’re delighted that several of our former media students were able to experience life on a multi-million-dollar film set and help bring a Mission Impossible film to life,” said Vanessa Jackson, Associate Professor at Birmingham City University’s Institute of Media and English.
“It was no doubt a fantastic experience for them to be one of the crew for a major feature film and to learn from some of the best filmmakers in the world.
“I’m sure it helps their CVs stand out from the crowd - I’m just jealous I wasn’t one of them and can’t say I had the opportunity to work with Tom Cruise!”

Congratulations are in order! Final-year Media Production students recently won a Royal Television Society (RTS) Midlands Student Award in the factual category for their gambling documentary.
Aaron Badhan, Dario Liguori, Abdul Jalfar and Mohammed Ahmed’s award-winning documentary is titled A Gambler’s Gambit. The stylishly produced film explores the little-known phenomenon of private, invitation only gambling evenings.
The documentary was also nominated in the Craft – Editing category.
Judges said it was a very close shout between the gambling documentary created for the group’s second-year TV Narratives module and Position Number 1, a film made by final-year Media Production student Scott Powell for his final major project, supervised by Media Production Lecturer Emily Rushmer.
Associate Professor Dr Vanessa Jackson said: "I hope that this award will inspire other students to tell original stories and create work demonstrating high production values."
BCU Chancellor Sir Lenny Henry commented on the strengths of A Gambler’s Gambit in his final address to the audience, which was played on screen at the awards ceremony.
Media Production student Aaron Badhan said: "It was an absolute honour to win such an amazing award, me and the team are so incredibly proud of the hard work we put in and we hope this is the first of many awards to come!"
Course Director of BA Media Production Dharmesh Rajput said: "I’m very proud of our Media Production students for their efforts and award win."
