The English Karate Federation is incredibly proud to share that one of our members, Mairi Kerin, Chief Instructor of the University of Birmingham Karate Club, has been awarded a Chief Superintendent's Commendation for an act of extraordinary bravery.

During an attempted armed robbery, Mairi confronted a hooded offender who demanded money from a frightened shopkeeper. Acting without hesitation or thought for her own safety, she stepped forward to protect others. Her courage and decisive action in a dangerous situation have rightfully earned her this commendation.

Reflecting on the incident, Mairi said:
"The man was hooded up, only his eyes were visible. He blocked the doorway and then demanded money while bringing something out of his left pocket – I was not going to wait to see what it was. The shopkeeper was frightened. That was enough."

Mairi’s quick thinking and bravery exemplify the spirit of karate and the values of respect, courage, and standing up for what is right. She is an incredible role model for her students at the University of Birmingham Karate Club, based at the Sports and Fitness Centre in Edgbaston.

As a 4th Dan instructor in the Wado Aiwakai Karate-do Federation, Mairi inspires others both on and off the dojo floor. This remarkable act of bravery reminds us that martial arts is not just about physical skill but about using discipline, courage, and strength to make a difference in the world.

Well done, Mairi – you are a shining example of the best of the English Karate Federation, and we are proud to have you as a member!
