Want to help the survival of some of our student groups?

Why not take a look at this list of societies, who need your help to continue. These could be societies who have failed to elect students onto their committees, or student groups who need members in order to stay as an affiliated group.

The Save A Society scheme aims to make once-popular groups easier to start back up, with all their assets maintained. If you'd like to get a group going again, drop us a message and we'll get you started!

Group Memberships for the 2023-2024 academic year are now available on the Guild website!

Society of the Month winner for June is…. the Public Speaking Society 🙌

The Public Speaking Society at UoB has existed since 2013!

When their committee first took their posts at the beginning of the year, they began co-ordinating and planning new initiatives, sessions, and ideas to work towards.

In order to turn the Public Speaking Society into a growing and flourishing community of avid public speakers.

During this academic year, their main achievements consisted of:

✅ Holding their first ever UoB Public Speaking Competition, which turned out to be a major success!
✅ Continuing to run weekly Public Speaking sessions throughout the academic year, involving hearing prepared speeches from their members, workshops on how to improve advocacy skills, and fun rounds of table-topics (impromptu speeches)
✅ More than doubling their society membership this academic year compared to 2021/2022
✅ Collaborating with other societies and Universities

These are just a few of the amazing successes the group has achieved this year, and we can’t wait to see what they do next! Guild of Students, University of Birmingham

Our society of the month for May is… GMTG!!🤩🤩

Following a successful main show Spring Awakening, GMTG put on a fabulous showcase at the start of May featuring many new faces to the society. This marks the first time GMTG has been able to run two shows simultaneously since COVID and has been the result of lots of hard work from committee. Over 50 people have been able to get involved with GMTG this semester.

The hard work does not stop there as the society now turn to start rehearsing an unauditioned showcase which will have a cast of around 40 split across two night featuring group numbers, duets and solos. It promises to be an inclusive event for anyone to get involved with musical theatre!🥳🥳 Guild of Students, University of Birmingham

We are happy to announce that our volunteers of the month for May are… Grace Westland and Jack Stacey, from Med Soc Committee!🎉🎉

📝📝Grace and Jack organised and ran the Big OSCE Prep revision day for students about to face their first set of clinical examinations. The event initially was open to 96 students and this filled up in 90 seconds, leading to the team re-structuring the day and booking out the whole medical school to increase capacity to 200 students. The day was facilitated by over 60 student and clinician volunteers and allowed nearly 100 students to go through mock OSCE examinations that were as closely replicative of the real exam as possible.📝📝

All 200 students benefited from high yield workshops focussing on the most important aspects on their exams and got in depth feedback as well as a resource booklet sent after the day. All content for the day was created by the 2 Med Soc committee members running the event to make it as relevant to Birmingham exams as possible. The event has received fantastic feedback and is the largest clinical revision event by Med Soc on record.🙌🙌

Guild Awards readyyyy… we can’t wait to see you all here!!🧜‍♀️💃🕺

🏆We are proud to present VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH for February🏆

The winner is…Darya Azarmi, President of Docs Not Cops for all their work on the Migrant Health Conference. 🏆🏆

Docs not Cops recently held their Migrant Health Conference in February at the Med School, where they received sponsorship from MDU and facilitated eight lectures and workshops led by external speakers. Across the day, they discussed a variety of topics including campaigning for migrant access to NHS services and working on the frontlines of conflict as a healthcare professional. The society strives to raise awareness and make the NHS an equitable and compassionate service for all: fighting against systemic injustices in healthcare such as racism and xenophobia.

Please contact Student Groups to collect your prize! 🏅

🏆We are proud to present SOCIETY OF THE MONTH for JANUARY and FEBRUARY🏆

January’s winner is… KCover!🕺💃

KCover have done an outstanding job throughout semester 1, from taking part in performances to attending Comic Con to delivering successful workshops!!💃In particular during UoBe Festival week KCover delivered an amazing performance, and have consistently posted a range of engaging content on their social media channels! 📸We would like to say a HUGE congrats for your amazing work!🙌🙌

February’s winner is… UoB Beat!✨✨

UoB Beat do incredible work in raising awareness. They recently organised and facilitated a Budget Ball Cabaret Night, using all profits to raise money to go towards Beat! They organised a variety of performances, with groups GMTG, UoB Ballroom, Pole Fitness, Panto, Medsoc Dance and UoB Dance all participating. It was a huge success, and despite being deliberately low priced to ensure affordability for students during the cost of living crisis, they still managed to fundraise over £400 for charity.

Please can both groups contact Student Groups at: [email protected] for their prizes! 🏅
