🚫💼 The government has instructed councils to discontinue 'woke' diversity schemes due to it being perceived as a waste of taxpayers’ money. 💰

🎙️ In this Aston means business podcast episode, Omar Rashid, Director of HR at Birmingham Central and Wolverhampton, and President of the Asian Chamber of Commerce, shares his disappointment with the government's criticisms of equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). Emphasising that it shouldn't be viewed as a 'scheme’ or ‘tick box exercise' but urging it to become the norm.
He shared examples of a ‘tick box mentality’ were businesses adopting Black History Month but neglecting the other 11 months, or providing a prayer room only during Ramadan.

SMEs struggle to implement EDI due to:
➡️ Limited education: Family-owned businesses, particularly those with lack of education may see or misinterpret mental health conditions or disabilities, potentially perceiving them as manipulative tactics rather than genuine concerns
➡️ Lack of patience: Business lacking the patience to accommodate employees with ADHD or health conditions, businesses would prefer to hire individuals without those conditions
➡️ Lack of resources: Many SMEs operate without a dedicated HR department or diversity leads for support.
Professor Shivani Sharma, the new deputy dean of people, culture and inclusion at Aston University responds “Not enough investment has gone into these roles because, if we look at the history, it tells us that just relying on everybody to do the right thing doesn’t work.”
Omar adds if EDI is done correctly, it can be a long term success for businesses “One SME business engaged with someone from an Asian background, wanted to tap into India, and guess what? He has the connections, and they were able to open a branch in India.”
What are your thoughts on this? Comment down below 💬

New podcast alert! 🎙️ - Episode 3, Series 7 of Aston means business.

This episode explores the challenges of bringing equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) to the workplace. We're thrilled to welcome two incredible guests:
🌟 Shivani Sharma: Deputy Dean of People, Culture, and Inclusion at Aston University.
🌟 Omar Rashid: Director of HR at Birmingham Central and Wolverhampton, and President of the Asian Chamber of Commerce, specialising in diversity and recruitment.
Topics discussed:
• Is money invested into EDI ‘wasteful’ as the government claims it to be?
• Are organisations truly embracing diversity, or merely ticking boxes?
• What are the challenges of bringing EDI into the workplace?

Prof. Sharma praises Aston University “So far I've been at the university for only six weeks but I have experienced it already as a very welcoming, very inclusive culture”.

🏆 She highlighted the university’s recent achievement of the Athena Swan Gold award for promoting gender equality in higher education, and stressing the continued need for progress. “80% plus of vice chancellors at the most senior level amongst universities of a leadership position are still identified as men… if we slice this down into you know minority ethnic women who are of a black heritage then you’re getting into very small numbers of representation”.

Join the conversation and listen to our latest episode to learn more about how we can create truly inclusive workplaces. 🌍💼
