JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Cover Supervisor

Hours: 5 days per week, term time only (32.5 hours per week

GRADE: GR3


JOB PURPOSE

1.1 To supervise pupils and their work during periods of short term teacher absence. The role involves taking sole charge of a group of pupils as required. This will include supervising pupils in other contexts too including: assemblies, special events, trips, exams, lunch and break times.

1.2 The cover supervisor will provide direction to students in the absence of their teacher, following guidance provided by a teacher, Cover Manager or member of the Senior. The primary focus of the role is to ensure that students are fully engaged in learning. The cover supervisor will be responsible for applying the Academy Behaviour Policy with consistency.


The Cover Supervisor may work with individual classes or support the combined cover systems in place at Washwood Heath Academy, where multiple classes are supervised as they participate in online learning. These arrangements are supported by the senior team. The Cover Supervisor provides support in the normal operations of the Academy, which may include working with small groups of students and supporting the senior team


To promote the general progress of staff and individual students, recognising that this acknowledges the need to have student learning at the centre of the school’s development. The thrust of the school’s development will be based on the premise that succeeding individuals make for succeeding organisations.


2. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Responsibilities

Supervise whole classes during the short-term absence of teachers and provide support for students, ensuring their safety and access to learning. To deliver lessons as set by the teacher, ensure pupils are on task and complete work set.
The primary focus when supervising will be to deliver the content of work set by the teacher, maintain good order, respond to questions, and generally assist students to undertake set activities and to keep students on task.
Use classroom/teaching skills/training/experience to support students.
Manage the behaviour of students whilst they are working to ensure an appropriate learning environment which is purposeful, orderly and productive including:
Completing electronic/paper registers for registrations and every class.
Dealing with any immediate problems or emergencies according to the school’s policies and procedures.
Collecting any completed work after the lesson and returning it to the appropriate teacher.
Rewarding students, where appropriate, in accordance with school procedures.
Reporting as appropriate, using the school’s agreed referral procedures on the behaviour of students during class, any issues arising.
Liaising with teachers to discuss work set during staff absence


The postholder must be familiar with the full range of school policies, particularly those regarding health and safety, safeguarding, professional conduct, equal opportunities and special educational needs.
The postholder must have the necessary skills to manage safely classroom activities, the physical learning space and resources for which they are responsible.
The postholder must have an understanding and ability to use a range of strategies to deal with classroom behaviour, as a whole, and also individual behavioural needs. The postholder must manage the behaviour of pupils whilst they are undertaking the work to ensure a constructive environment.

To take all reasonable steps to maintain good conduct and discipline among students and safeguard their health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere.

To be attached to a Department or Faculty and support colleagues with producing resources, extra-curricular activities, homework completing, detention duties and other Teaching & Learning activities.


THE COVER SUPERVISOR WILL ALSO (where appropriate)

Provide specialist support in specific attached department areas, giving support to teaching staff and students when cover is not required; including assisting with the preparation, and organisation of resources as directed by the HOD/HOF.
To support the duty teams at breaks and lunchtimes with undertaking duties as and when required.
Provide cover for form tutor sessions as required.
Assisting with the presentation of display work in Attached Department areas.
To participate in general supervision as required before, during and after school.
To promote a trusting, caring relationship with form members, offering students individual guidance.
