A huge congratulations to Jack who passed his viva yesterday!!
A little different to the normal viva process - but in times like these, it’s all about positivity (and of course staying safe!). This is his photo of him on zoom with some colleagues from the department congratulating him after he passed yesterday 🥳
Jack has been a huge part of the department; promoting us on social media, doing department filming and for the and many of our students have had jack as a demonstrator on field trips!
Jacks PhD research focused on the internal structures of salt flow and how it is related to the life of mature basins.
Congratulations again Jack! 🤩🥳

Something fun to try! The posted this into their story (go check it out!) and what a fun idea while we are all isolating ⚒ how many can you get? Let us know in the comments if you can shout BINGO! 💫
(Annoyingly has to cut off the Geologists Association’s signature and some beautiful illustrations so it will fit on this post - does NOT own this photo, we give all credit to the GeolSoc!)

Congratulations to Dr Kate Ashley on successfully defending her PhD thesis!🤩🥳🍾
Kate's PhD research was on compound-specific isotope analysis for palaeoclimate reconstruction. Measuring ratios and carbon isotopes of alkenone biomarkers (produced by haptophyte algae) to reconstruct sea-surface temperatures and pCO2, with a focus on the mid to late Miocene (~16-5 million years ago). @ University of Birmingham

Organic geochemist Dr James Bendle visited Broadmeadow Infant School (4B and 4H) for some outreach about Antarctic climate change and scientific ocean drilling! Enthusiasm ran through the room from the pupils and it looks like there were some keen future scientists in the classroom!
