8 years ago, the weather was just like it is today, and Kate had just welcomed her second little boy into the world. ๐Ÿ’™

With the warmer temperatures this week, here are some helpful hints and tips for keeping your little ones cool and comfortable. โ˜€๏ธ

๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿฝ Avoid covering buggies or prams with blankets or covers that restrict airflow, as this can quickly lead to overheating ๐Ÿฅต Covers can also make it difficult for parents to see if their baby is becoming distressed or uncomfortable.

โ˜‚๏ธ Instead, consider using a clip-on sunshade or parasol for shade. Regularly check if your baby is too warm by feeling their tummy or the back of their neck. Always research any products attached to prams or buggies carefully. Brands such as SnoozeShade provide detailed guidance around safe use and airflow.

๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ A paddling pool can be a lovely way to help babies and children cool down. Keep pools shaded during very hot weather, actively supervise children at all times, and empty the pool when not in use.

๐Ÿคฑ๐Ÿฝ Keeping babies well hydrated is so important. Fully breastfed babies usually do not need extra water until they begin eating solid foods, although they may want more frequent feeds during hot weather.

๐Ÿผ For bottle-fed babies, alongside their normal milk feeds, you can offer small amounts of cooled boiled water. If you have any concerns or questions about feeding, speak to your health visitor or medical professional for advice.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Babies over six months old can drink tap water and should be offered sips of water with meals.

๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿฅ’๐ŸŠ Foods with a high water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, and oranges, are great for hydration. Frozen breast milk can also be a refreshing way to help little ones stay cool and hydrated.

๐ŸŒกBabies sleep best in a room kept between 16โ€“20ยฐC. The summer months can make this more difficult, so consider lighter sleepwear and minimal bedding. Baby sleep bags usually include tog guidance for different room temperatures and seasons.

๐ŸชŸ Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day and open bedroom doors where possible to help rooms stay cooler.

๐Ÿ›€ A cool bath before bedtime can also help little ones settle more comfortably.

๐Ÿ’จ Fans can help circulate air in the room, but should never blow directly onto your baby.

Hope these tips help you and your little ones stay safe and comfortable during the warm weather. ๐Ÿ’š

184 children and young people needed specialist burn care from BBQ injuries in 2025.

For parents, that's a powerful reminder that something as simple as a garden BBQ can quickly become dangerous, especially with curious little ones nearby.

According to the London Fire Brigade, BBQs should always be used outdoors, placed on flat ground, and kept well away from fences, sheds, and anything that can catch fire. But just as importantly for families is to create a clear "no-go zone" around the BBQ so children can't wander too close.

Never leave a BBQ unattended, even for a moment. Avoid using petrol or other accelerants, and once you're finished, make sure it's completely cooled before moving or disposing of it.

Little hands, fast feet, and open flames do not mix! With a few simple precautions, your BBQ can stay a safe and fun part of summer.

Enjoy a happy and injury-free sunny bank holiday. ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒž The sun is on its way โ€” that means the wasps and bees are too! They will be buzzing around trying to sabotage picnics, pub garden lunches, and every ice-cream break they can find.

๐Ÿ Across parks and gardens, parents can be seen frantically waving their arms in an attempt to keep the unwelcome visitors away, while children squeal and scatter in panic.

So what should you do if a wicked wasp or bothersome bee stings your baby or young child? ๐Ÿ‘‡

โš ๏ธ IMPORTANT: If you see any serious swelling of the affected area, swelling of the lips or any difficulty breathing, ring 999
(OR 112 if abroad) without delay as this may be a severe allergic reaction.

โ˜€๏ธ SUN CREAM โ˜€๏ธ

When choosing a sunscreen, itโ€™s important to understand what the labels mean.

โญ UVA Protection

The star rating shows the level of UVA protection in the product. In the UK, sunscreens are rated up to 5 stars โ€” the more stars, the higher the protection against UVA rays.

You may also see the letters โ€œUVAโ€ inside a circle. This is a European symbol confirming that the UVA protection meets EU standards.

UVA rays pe*****te deep into the skin and can cause long-term damage, including premature ageing, wrinkles, sun spots, leathery skin, and all types of skin cancer.

๐Ÿงด SPF & UVB Protection

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures protection against UVB rays. SPF ratings range from 2 to 50+, with SPF 50+ offering the highest level of protection.

UVB rays are mainly responsible for sunburn and skin redness. Although they do not pe*****te as deeply as UVA rays, they are still highly damaging and play a major role in the development of skin cancers, including melanoma.

๐Ÿ“… Check the Expiry Date

Sunscreen doesnโ€™t last forever. Most sun creams have a shelf life of 2โ€“3 years if stored away from heat and direct sunlight.

Look for the open jar symbol marked with a number followed by โ€œMโ€ (months). This is called the Period-After-Opening (PAO) symbol and tells you how long the product should be used after opening.

For example:
โ€ข 12M = best used within 12 months
โ€ข 18M = best used within 18 months

โ˜€๏ธ Does your sun cream need a refresh?

๐Ÿ‘• Kate was back in her green shirt yesterday, delivering our 2-hour First Aid Awareness Class for Adults to a fantastic group at Clent Parish Hall.

๐Ÿซ€๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿซ This comprehensive session covered essential, life-saving topics including heart attack recognition, CPR, defibrillator use, stroke, burns, bleeding, severe allergic reactions, choking, seizures, and fractures.

๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ With several attendees part of a walking group, we also explored practical scenarios such as managing sprains and strains, bites and stings, and handling situations like foreign objects in the eye or even a fly in the ear!

โ›‘๏ธ We were especially pleased to have the opportunity to guide the group through the process of using their community defibrillatorโ€”an invaluable skill that can make a critical difference in an emergency.

๐Ÿ’š It was a truly rewarding session, and weโ€™re incredibly grateful for the enthusiastic participation and wonderful feedbackโ€”thank you to everyone who attended!
