To listen and respond we can use (Goodwin 2017) consultative approaches, creative approaches, interaction approaches, documentative approaches, person centred approaches and non instructed approaches. The foundation is understanding communication and cognition.

Communicate with Me is mentioned in the new Raising the Bar PMLD standards 'Where it is not possible to directly ascertain the views of people with PMLD services should demonstrate how it attempted to do this and evidence how the service design and delivery reflect their perceived wishes, feelings, and preferences' (Goodwin et al 2015).

Over the next several years I will be conducting research for my PhD. Broadly, the research will explore 'Quality assurance and CPD of Communication and Involvement for pupils with Severe / Profound Learning Disabilities at Special Schools'.
The research will particularly explore the application and effectiveness of 'Communicate with Me' Quality Assurance Materials.

In association with Speechmark we will be releasing a variety of blogs. These will be posted via Speechmark, Communicate with Me, Facebook, Twitter , the Choice Forum and PMLD Network.
The Commnicate with Me blogs will introduce a range to tools and work practice approaches that the book and quality assurance guidance helps you to implement so that you can improve the effectiveness of communication and involvement with people with a learning disability. These include using and developing communicatton tools such as visual timetables, communication books, objects of reference, sign language, accessible information and work practice issues such as documenting communication, supporting change, person centred planning and choice and decision making.
