We’ve had some amazing composition workshops these past few weeks!

Students studying composition on our Music Course have had the opportunity to work with BCMG, Solem Quartet, Workers Union Ensmeble & the Composers Choir - they had the opportunity to hear their very own compositions played by professional musicians and interpreted by top conductors Mariana Rosas & Konstantinos Terzakis

a HUGE thanks to all that were involved in making this possible, including Composition lecturer Ryan Latimer (thanks for these fab photos!) 🙌

Today saw the conclusion of our 2023/24 Barber Concerts season with a fantastic recital from CBSO clarinettist Oliver Janes and pianist John Reid.

We’ve welcomed a brilliant line up of artists in our lunchtime and evening series, and have enjoyed our largest audiences on record.

With a short break for exam period, we then get to enjoy more music from the University Music & Concerts at University of Birmingham ensembles with a two-week long Summer Festival of Music in June.

A huge thank you to everyone who has joined us in 23/24, whether on stage, in the audience or listening at home on BBC Radio 3!

Our 2024/25 season is shaping up to be a corker, and we can’t wait to share it with you!

They put on a brilliant concert last night featuring many incredible early instruments including some bagpipes!

Well done to all those involved 👏

Brass Band Conductor Vacancy:

Job post:

University of Birmingham Brass Band is on the search for a new music director following a wonderful 11 years with current MD Stuart Birnie.

We are seeking to appoint a new professional conductor to continue to support the bands development and the presentation of concerts throughout the academic year. One of the forty ensembles that make up University Music, the band is an open access ensemble with students from across the University taking part.

Larger than a standard contesting band, the University Brass Band welcomes players of all abilities and prides itself on being an inclusive and sociable band.

Following the retirement of the band’s current conductor at the end of the 23/24 academic year we are looking to appoint a replacement who can be available to lead the two hour rehearsal every Wednesday evening in term time, hold seating auditions at the beginning of the academic year, conduct the band at the annual UniBrass contest, propose repertoire, and identify soloists from within the band, and support students with an interest in brass band composition and conducting. Experience with entertainment contests and youth bands would be beneficial.

Rehearsals: Wednesday 7.30-9.30pm - The Dome, Bramall Music Building.

Applications:
Interested parties should email a CV and cover letter outlining their suitability for the post to Jo Sweet, Head of University Music and Concerts no later than midday on Tuesday 30th April 2024.
Contact: [email protected]

Shortlisted candidates will have an opportunity to conduct part of a band rehearsal in May and will be invited for short informal interview afterwards.

Remuneration:
Work is undertaken on a freelance basis as an approved University supplier. The post will be reviewed on an annual basis. The work is paid at an hourly rate which is commensurate with experience, to be agreed with the Head of University Music and Concerts.

We live and work in a city that has one of the most vibrant cultural scenes in the UK. Funding cuts, lack of government support for the arts, and building closure threats are dominating the conversation at the moment. We would like to encourage our followers to continue to support the arts in the city and you can start by signing this petition to support the UKs oldest cinema. Though council funding cuts don’t directly impact on our activities, our students, staff and audiences all benefit from Birmingham rich cultural offer and we partner with many of the organisations who face cuts. We will continue to support and advocate for those who face ever-growing challenges to survive.
