Heat exhaustion and heat stroke - NHS.UK 19/06/2017

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are two potentially serious conditions that can occur if you get too hot.

They usually happen during a heatwave or in a hot climate, but can also occur when you're doing very strenuous physical exercise.

Heat exhaustion is where you become very hot and start to lose water or salt from your body, which leads to the symptoms listed below and generally feeling unwell.

Heatstroke is where the body is no longer able to cool itself and a person's body temperature becomes dangerously high (sunstroke is when this is caused by prolonged exposure to direct sunlight).

Heatstroke is less common, but more serious. It can put a strain on the brain, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys, and can be life-threatening.

If heat exhaustion isn't spotted and treated early on, there's a risk it could lead to heatstroke.

Who's most at risk?

Anyone can develop heat exhaustion or heatstroke during a heatwave or while doing heavy exercise in hot weather.

However, some people are at a higher risk.

These include:
elderly people.
babies and young children.
people with a long-term health condition, such as diabetes or a heart or lung condition.
people who are already ill and dehydrated (for example, from gastroenteritis).
people doing strenuous exercise for long periods, such as military soldiers, athletes, hikers and manual workers.

Fore more information on what to do visit the NHS choices website.

Stay Safe

Falls in Care Homes | Prevention is better than the cure.

The management and prevention of falls is an extremely important issue in maintaining a high quality of life and independence for older people, particularly for those living in care homes.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), older people living in nursing and residential homes are three times more likely to fall than those living in the community and a 25% are likely to suffer serious injuries and be admitted to hospital following the accident.

As we all know the risk of falling over increases as we get older. There are many reason for this including.....

Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Training - Mental Health Training 08/06/2017

Doing what we do best.

Today we are supporting leisure Staff with Post Incident Stress Debrief Training.

Why is this critical incident stress debriefing training essential?

Following a critical incident, employers and employees are often ill-equipped to handle the chaos of such a catastrophic event like workplace violence, self-harm or su***de. Consequently, those affected by such an event often struggle to regain control of their lives or to regain a sense of normality. Many who have been traumatised by a critical event may eventually need professional attention and care for weeks, months and possibly years to come. The final extent of any traumatic event may never be known or realistically estimated in terms of loss, bereavement, mourning and grief. In the aftermath of any critical incident, psychological reactions are quite common and are often predictable.

What is a Critical Incident?

Within the context of social and residential care, a “critical incident” is a sudden death in the line of carrying out daily duties, serious injury, a physical or psychological threat to the safety or wellbeing of an individual, self-harm, su***de or attempted su***de. Moreover.....
