"When I started my foundation year at BCU, I never thought I’d be where I am today: making a difference in the black community and returning to BCU to do my PhD.

When I was a BCU student, I used to see pictures of alumni on the walls, I’d read about them and think ‘wow, they’ve gone on to achieve so much’ and now I’m one of them. It fills me with pride to have been born and educated in Birmingham.”

Sophie’s passion for business led her to complete both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at BCU, before setting up her business Black Owned Birmingham, which is now the second largest black business and community network within the UK. Her work to develop the business community has seen her win several awards for her social and community activism.

"There are a lot of tough moments in my job, from attending serious emergencies to holding someone’s hand as they take their last breath. I take pride in knowing that no matter what happens to my patients, I’ve provided the best possible care thanks to the strong foundation my training at BCU has given me. I am a BCU nurse and proud of it.” - Jamie

Jamie was told at a young age that he wouldn't amount to anything, but that didn't stop him from following his dream. Now he's a Critical Care Nurse, and feels like he has the best job in the world. Studying at BCU gave him the skills he needed to become a caring and strategic Nurse, who puts his patients at the heart of everything he does.

Are you supporting a young person with revision and exams? Here are five simple tips for revision success:

1. Help them plan - make a list of their exam dates and encourage them to use a weekly planner
2. Create a good environment - make a tidy, calm place where your child can revise and ensure they've got the tools they need.
3. Encourage regular breaks - make sure they're also having time to relax, breaks between revision sessions are also important for consolidating memory.
4. Make it manageable - keep revision sessions short, using a Pomodoro timer is a great way to do this.
5. Watch for signs of frustration - if they're struggling with a topic it can be better to have a break and work on something else for a while.

There's lots more advice for helping your child through exam season on our website, plus you can sign up for regular revision tips straight to your email inbox.
