Think Corner: Research With Purpose
Founded in 1900 and believed to be the UK’s first redbrick university, the University of Birmingham is ranked within the world’s top 100 institutions, and takes enormous pride that national reviews rate over 90% of our research as world leading or of international quality. With hundreds of researchers and over £460 million in research funding, we study a divers
e range of subjects across arts and law, social, engineering, physical, life and environmental sciences, as well as medicine. But what does any of that mean for you? Our belief is that great research makes the world more wonderful – from expanding our understanding of our own bodies, the environment around us and the fundamental principles of our universe, to the application of that understanding to improved medicines, innovative technologies, cultural creativity and new policies and legislation that improve people’s lives. Almost everything around you in your everyday lives is the subject or product of research in some way, and over the next few weeks we want to help you find out more about the world you live in. Research should be open to everyone to get involved in – how can we ever hope to improve people’s lives if we don’t work with people to know what needs improving and get your thoughts on how to do it? This pop-up shop isn’t the endpoint of our great thoughts, it’s the starting point for you improving our ideas, helping us to identify and answer the research challenges of the future. We want you to think differently, because that will help us think differently.
