Children often feel isolated and lonely when their desire for social connection is not met, which can have a detrimental effect on their mental health. Place2Be launched the first-ever Children's Mental Health Week in 2015 to highlight the importance of children and young people's mental health. Since then, it has continued to grow, going from strength to strength and is becoming a key event on the calendar for Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2 and beyond.

You can get involved in this year’s awareness week by visiting Place2Be’s website www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk where you can find excellent resources and activities to share with your classes.
Let’s make sure that no child has to face a mental health problem alone.

05/02/2024

Children's Mental Health Week 2024 is taking place from 5–11 February 2024, marking an important time in the calendar for The PE Hub community as we help to equip and empower young people throughout the UK.

This year's theme, 'My Voice Matters', is about inspiring confidence in children and young people by providing them with the tools they need to express themselves. As many as 1 in 6 young people in the UK are experiencing mental health challenges right now, showing just how important it is to help children express their feelings, and also feel understood and encouraged by those around them.

We are dedicated supporters of the cause and will be posting Children's Mental Health Week related content throughout the week. So keep an eye out on our socials, and also be sure to visit Place2Be’s website www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk for more information and some excellent resources.

Many thanks from The PE Hub team, we hope you get involved too!

Side steps

Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart.
Take a step to the side with your right foot, then bring your left foot to meet it.
Repeat this movement to the left side.
Keep your knees slightly bent and your core engaged for stability.

Heel kicks

Start by standing with your feet hip-width apart.
Lift your right heel towards your glutes while simultaneously swinging your left arm forward and your right arm back.
Lower your right heel back down and repeat with your left heel.
Repeat continuously increasing speed to work at a harder intensity.

Star jumps
Start by standing up straight with your feet together and arms by your sides.
Next, jump up and spread your legs apart while simultaneously lifting your arms above your head.
As you land, bring your legs back together and lower your arms back to your sides.
Keep your core engaged and your knees slightly bent to reduce the impact on your joints when landing.

Arm circles
Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart and arms by your sides.
Slowly lift both arms out to the sides and make small circles in a forward direction.
Gradually increase the size of the circles until your arms are fully extended.
Reverse the direction of the circles and gradually decrease their size until your arms are back at your sides.
Keep your shoulders relaxed and engage your core for stability.

You’ve seen the weather forecast, you’ve checked the thermometer, you’ve been wearing about 5 layers every time you step outside… I think it’s safe to say we’re in a bit of a cold spell!

Well, The PE Hub is coming to the rescue, and as much as we’d love to fly everyone out to the Maldives, we’ve got the next best solution… Here are some excellent exercises for getting your blood pumping and keeping your classes warm this winter.

Check out our wonderfully illustrated moves we will share over the next few days.

High knees
Start by standing with your feet hip-width apart. Keep your chest up and shoulders relaxed.
Begin the motion by lifting your right knee as high as you can towards your chest. Simultaneously, swing your left arm forward.
As you lower your right knee, immediately lift your left knee in the same manner, swinging your right arm forward. Keep alternating legs.
Imagine you're running in place but lifting your knees as high as possible with each step whilst continuing to move the opposite arm.

Upper body twists
Hold your arms outstretched in a “T” position, with your feet at shoulder width apart.
Be sure to press both feet into the ground throughout the exercise.
Keeping your chin in line with your chest, turn your upper body by 45-60 degrees.
Alternate between a left side and right side stretch at a medium, controlled speed.
