📢📢Our group is growing but we are still looking out for people who wish to be part of our research (especially male participants). You will provide valuable insights based on your personal experience with chronic musculoskeletal disorders.

💪You will be needed for a 2-hour online meeting, a half-day face-to-face workshop in Birmingham and an optional half-day workshop/ event in Birmingham. You will be also asked to spend additional time reviewing materials.

We're reaching out to older individuals (50+), especially those who:
• Have faced challenges like chronic back pain, arthritis, or similar muscle and joint issues.
• Might also be managing other conditions, such as depression, diabetes, or asthma.
• Have diverse work experiences, be it physical jobs, desk jobs, or leadership roles.

The JOINTWORKS Network aims to develop effective strategies for managing chronic musculoskeletal disorders (CMSDs) in the workplace, particularly for older employees. This project involves a collaborative effort between healthcare professionals, researchers, employers, and public representatives.

"The overall UK inactivity rate fell between 2011 and 2020 due to long-term social and economic trends, as fewer people took early retirement or looked after family and the home. This trend was reversed by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, driven by a net increase of 400k people who became inactive due to long-term sickness – which is now the dominant reason for inactivity. However, the rise in inactivity due to long-term sickness was a long-term trend that was rising prior to 2020". (SOM 2024)

Our research is dedicated to helping employees with chronic musculoskeletal disorders (CMSDs) – conditions that cause long-term pain and disability – navigate their challenges in the workplace. We've discovered that there's a significant gap in awareness and understanding of CMSDs at work. Both managers and older workers need more training and education to handle these conditions effectively.

By joining the JOINTWORKS Network, you're not just contributing to a research initiative; you're helping shape the future of workplace health and wellbeing for an ageing workforce.

Employees in our study were motivated to self-manage and most of them understood the necessity of taking their health into their own hands. However, they mainly used passive strategies such as medication or massage.

Key takeaway from our research: Building effective communication, fostering care, and trust are essential in supporting employees with chronic musculoskeletal disorders. "
