β TALES FROM THE VALE β
Say hello to Kanak, an international student living in Selly Oak Village.
"I fondly remember the first day I landed in Brum as if it was just yesterday. Deciding to study a Masters in Law after working for two years was not easy, especially moving to new country. I was the Assistant Director for International Collaborations for the O.P Jindal Global University, my first graduate job that I found very rewarding and challenging. I was leading meetings and conducting negotiations with not just Indian academic stakeholders but also delegates from top-ranking universities across the globe. I also got the opportunity to work on the collaboration between the University of Birmingham and JGU - and now I study here!
While I miss India, the picturesque and ancient redbrick architecture of Birmingham makes it all worthwhile. So far, every weekend I've been out and about exploring what the UK has to offer. I've been to Malvern Hills with friends, explored local parks like Cannon Hill, and visited the beautiful Winterbourne House and Garden. I enjoy travelling and intend to make some plans to adventure outside the UK with friends, this summer.
I'm also enjoying the regular Hall Rep activities put on within accommodation, alongside our flat's epic house parties, and hot chocolate chat sessions.
I want to pause time as it feels like only yesterday I'd started my journey in Brum!"

β TALES FROM THE VALE β
Meet Shuai REN Felix, an international student living in Jarratt Hall, Selly Oak Village.
"I'm studying for a Masters in Social Work which is quite rare for Chinese students to pursue as a degree. I've lived in Canada for five years and yet I'm still experiencing 'culture shock' since moving to the UK. Whether it's the vocabulary choices like people saying 'toilets' instead of 'restrooms', or 'car boot' instead of 'trunk', I'm even surprised by how people get on and off the bus through the same door.
I don't get to spend as much time on campus like other students as I'm either going to my work placement or staying within my room to work on my dissertation, so I would assume my experience of university life is slightly different from others. However, it means I get to explore more of Birmingham, and see what other suburban areas far away from campus are like. I like talking to the local residents and my work colleagues, getting to hear their stories which give me a entirely different perspective as a student.
I usually start work at 9:30am and get off around 5:30pm, so I see my flatmates at dinner. My flatmates each have their own diverse backgrounds which again, gives me the chance to experience new cultures. Living in Selly Oak Village also means I have great support from the accommodation team. My absolute favourites, Chloe and Luke, I cannot thank enough for creating a wonderful vibe, and making me feel right at home.
I also wanted to share some advice which is, if you come to the University of Birmingham, the most important thing to do is 'experience': experience study; experience Birmingham; experience living with others you didn't know before, and then you might discover you have a new way of understanding in you life, and the world!"
Whether you're a student living at the Vale, Selly Oak Village or Pritchatts Park, we'd love to hear your story!
