Hello all! It's Harvest Festival this Sunday so here are some of our favourite facts about the celebration:

🌽 Harvest Festival is the celebration of food grown on the land.
🌽 Harvest is mainly associated with fruit and veg, which we give thanks for.
🌽 It is celebrated annually at the time of the Harvest Moon; this usually falls on the last Sunday in September.
🌽 It is one of the oldest and most traditional British festivals and has taken place since 1843!
🌽 Farmers celebrated the end of the harvest with a big meal called a harvest supper. Some churches still host this supper.
🌽 In the early days, a corn doll was created from the last sheaf of corn harvested and displayed at the banquet table

Sounds boring, I know! But it’s unlikely that kids will practise these sorts of skills spontaneously, so going over them the summer helps them to remember. Maybe try some educational computer games and apps that make practice fun.

𝟯. 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻! 🧬
Sometimes children find it hard to connect what they know about science to the real world. So, try some easy experiments at home, done with everyday household items - https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/parenting/g32176446/science-experiments-for-kids/

𝟰. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺𝘀, 𝘇𝗼𝗼𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 🏛
Visit a museum, the zoo or taking a nature walk are all low-cost ways for children to have fun while learning. You can make these experiences even more enriching by setting them tasks to do whilst there i.e., a scavenger hunt across a museum.

𝟱. 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 🎲
Board games like Scrabble and Monopoly are both fun and educational. They will come in particularly handy on those rainy days by providing hours of mentally stimulating entertainment, as well as a bit of healthy competition.

This year’s theme is 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘦𝘴. By teaming up with WWF, the Summer Reading Challenge will help you discover ways that you or your child can make a difference to the environment. Reading is important and can help avoid any loss of learning over the summer, so check out your local library for lots of interesting reads!

Each year Children’s Art Week is run by 𝘌𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘈𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘎𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. It is a time for schools, art galleries, museums and community groups to engage in art activities and events.

The aim is simple: provide opportunities for children, young people and families to take part in practical activities with artists and art educators.
