Please see the letter below. I urge everyone to contact, by whatever means necessary, our local councillors and hold them accountable for the inaction and the shocking lack of funding for our area of Hodge Hill.

08/04/2024

Dear Majid Mahmood

I write with a great deal of concern which is shared by many local residents on the shocking state of disrepair of our roads which has resulted in distress encountered by members of the Hodge Hill community.

Any suggestion that the condition of the roads around all the avenues is palpably poor would be considered an understatement. This is particularly the case with several roads and avenues around Radstock Avenue and, indeed, in Ward End, which appear to be in a terrible state of repair. It appears that our area has been wholly neglected for a considerable length of time. The residents as well as myself ask what you have done to fight for any improvements on our behalf. I would stress that this is not a one-off, but a consistent pattern where there has been significant neglect of the condition of our roads whereby the potholes are not only innumerable, but the general state and condition of the roads including the pavements is shocking.

Take the example of Lindale Avenue within which there are now many potholes and fractures on the entirety of the road which as well as being deep, are dangerous to both motorists and pedestrians. Yet upon notification, the council have failed to prioritise this accordingly and respond with a generic message. Another example is Wallbank road in Ward End. I have advised the council of potholes which are significantly deeper than a tennis ball, yet, once again, my telephone calls elicited no more than a very poor repair, by work shy repairmen it seems, to a single pothole whilst several others only metres and apart warranting urgent attention were completely ignored.

The residents and I feel that you have done very little to bring funding to the area and this is demonstrably evident by the shocking state of disrepair of both pavements and roads. We feel that the questions below need to be addressed.

1. Why is the area not evaluated or checked for potential issues and problems on a regular basis?
2. What funding, if any, are you bringing to the area?
3. As you are a resident of the area, why have no inspections or any evaluations taken place by yourself in order to ascertain these and other issues faced by the local residents?
4. Furthermore, given that we are a Band D residential area, why are we lacking any form of attention or funding of any description in relation to the state of our roads?

It is imperative that this is given your earnest attention and the matters pertaining to the above are responded to promptly.

Yours sincerely,
M. Zahid
Tutor.

Who Should I Vote For? → 28/02/2024

If you are angry, frustrated and feeling utterly helpless at the genocidal situation in Palestine in which our politicians have been complicit in exhibiting their shameless, brazen and unequivocal support for Israel, I strongly suggest that you support The Muslim Vote organisation who have already initiated, with the support of Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND) amongst others, the first steps that we desperately require with which to make the Muslim vote in the UK matter and count!!

The Labour Party has already proven as to which side their bread is buttered. I plead with all concerned to now revise your way of voting. The 19th-century 'Baradari' voting culture needs to come to an end. That is, in my view, the single-handedly most significant reason as to why we are standing where we are. It is most imperative that we stop voting blindly. Surely it is common sense that any road should be based on competency, merit and ability. In fact the founding father of Pakistan forewarned us against nepotism and its dangers that we have all too sadly willingly embraced.

The Labour Party of today is not the Labour Party of the 1970's. In fact, there is now very little difference between the two main parties. There are two sides of the same coin. The Labour Party, both at the local and national level has evidently taken our vote for granted and the concerns of the community have been completely and utterly ignored at every juncture.

It is time to take action now for the sake of our future generations this country.

Who Should I Vote For? → We believe in devolved decision-making. Local communities are empowered to back a candidate that is pro-Palestine and pro-peace. We will reflect their choice faithfully below - regardless of our personal views.

As you all are aware from the previous messages in which I have attempted to explain some parts of the English language to you, I am sure you would agree, it is full of implied, idiomatic and contextual interpretations. It is impossible to flourish in English Language without being able to infer things from your own thoughts and understand both explicit and implicit writing.

Furthermore, I always tell students that reading is the key to being successful in English. The constant nuances, the parries and jabs of phrases, the manipulation of words, and the personal inferences made from the book and other creative sources help the student in the creation and development of a vast vocabulary which is essential in any learning process. Moreover, the majority of Asian children who go to school are usually proficient in Maths based subjects and deficient in "wordy" subjects such as English Language, English Literature, History and other humanities. The way we can overcome this is simply by developing a consistent reading pattern which in turn assists in knowing how to identify these common features.

Examples of a feature such as the famous idiom is "its raining cats and dogs". Reading this without fully understanding the context behind this phrase will seem like another language (if you'll pardon the pun) but understanding the context- bad weather makes the phrase more understandable.

Children need to understand a variety of language nuances (gentle subtleties), implied and explicit meanings and the use idioms and expressions and proverbs. Additionally, employing devices such as irony and sarcasm ( common place in colloquial language) can be applied to suggest the opposite or something completely different. For instance, if you were to ask me whether I wanted a glass of water, my response may well be 'No, i would much rather die of thirst'. Clearly an attempt at sarcasm.

For example, if I say... 'I wrestled with the idea of whether I should go to the park'. Children will need to understand that 'wrestled' here does not mean to fight but debated, doubted, uncertainty or unsure. Of course, wrestled as a stand alone phrase means to fight, however in this sentence the context clearly implies that i was unsure whether i should go to the park. This is a good example of contextual language.

Much of what one would develop via reading to be able to draw the correct inferences and perceptive abilities. Therefore, a more wider exposure to language is beneficial.

I very much recommend and profoundly suggest both parents and children to familiarise themselves with current affairs. This can be done by visiting BBC Online news website and is particularly useful for current affairs. This website is signed up to The Clear English Standards.
The question in the text might be:

Does the word wrestled mean:

A: Fight
B: Challenge
C: Doubtful
D: Argue

This is what you need to teach to your child and in particular the 11+ candidates and clearly these skills come from a lot of reading. In fact I myself read about a book a day as a child of the 1970's and 80's. It appears that i have inadvertently given my age away.

Clearly these skills are not developed overnight. you need to explain that the READING IN CONTEXT IE. TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES !!!

Dear Parents,

RE: Improving language and vocabulary.

Encourage your child to read BBC news online which is highly recommended since it is reputable and a subscriber to Clear English Standards.

Additionally, I recommend, particularly for younger ( primary years) audiences, BBC’s Newsround website to develop linguistic approaches and comprehension abilities.

This is because the English language is made up of expressional terminology such as idioms, colloquialisms, language nuances and variations, proverbial expressions including implied and explicit symbolisms and inference in contextual forms i.e. Reading between the lines (This one is terribly important).

Clearly this favours those that undertake a regular reading pattern.

Remember this, consistent exposure to newsworthy content and current affairs is incredibly invaluable in developing a variety language skills for children and adults alike.

Kind regards,
Tutor.
