Students at King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys are celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results, reflecting five years of hard work, ambition and commitment.

More than 60% of all GCSE grades were awarded at Grades 7–9, with outstanding performances across the year group. Fifteen students achieved 10 GCSEs at Grades 7–9, while more than a quarter of students achieved at least nine GCSEs at this level.

Mathematics results were particularly impressive, with almost four out of every five students achieving Grades 7–9. An exceptional 46 students achieved the very highest Grade 9 in Mathematics – almost a third of the entire year group.

The results demonstrate strong achievement across the whole cohort, with 98% of students achieving Grade 5 or above in both English and Mathematics, an improvement on the previous year.

A Level Success at King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School

King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School is pleased to celebrate the achievements of its Year 13 students in this summer’s A Level examinations and the wide range of opportunities that now lie ahead for them.

Students have achieved a strong set of results, with 31% of all grades awarded at A or A*, 60% at A*-B, and 81% at A*-C. An exceptional five students achieved straight A* grades, while 24 students secured all A* and A grades, reflecting the academic commitment, determination and ambition that characterise the school community.

Students will now be progressing to a wide range of destinations, including the University of Cambridge, the University of Birmingham, the University of Warwick, London School of Economics, Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham, the University of Manchester, Durham University and Aston University.

Everyone at King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School is incredibly proud that one of our Sixth Form students, Haleemah Begum, is standing as a candidate to represent Birmingham in the UK Youth Parliament.

Being a Youth Parliament candidate is a significant achievement. It demonstrates leadership, commitment to public service and a determination to make a positive difference for young people across Birmingham.

The election is an important opportunity for young people aged 11–18 to play an active role in democracy. By voting, they can influence who represents their views and help shape discussions about the future of Birmingham. It is a valuable reminder that every young person has a voice and that their opinions can help shape their local community.

AI in Everyday Life – Virtual Assembly at HGS

On Tuesday 14 July, Year 10 Computer Science students at Handsworth Grammar School participated in a virtual assembly exploring the growing role of artificial intelligence in everyday life.
With AI likely to influence almost every career in the future, the session helped students understand why developing confidence, awareness and critical thinking in this area is becoming increasingly important.

Students developed their understanding of how AI systems are trained, the importance of human oversight and the need to think critically about emerging technologies. Key themes included fairness, safety and responsible AI, alongside insights into the diverse and exciting career opportunities available across the technology sector.

The session also explored how AI already underpins many of the technologies students use each day, including navigation apps, streaming recommendations, voice assistants and smartphone tools.

It was a valuable opportunity to strengthen students’ digital literacy and encourage them to consider both the opportunities and responsibilities associated with an increasingly AI-enabled world.

From hands-on encryption challenges to discovering the links between Alan Turing's work and modern AI, it was a memorable and enriching experience. 👏
