Northfield Nursery, Bright Kids, Northfield, Birmingham An EXCELLENT Early Years setting priding itself on being "your first choice provider for childcare"

Northfield's excellent outdoor space has recently been completely refurbished. There are now defined areas for climbing, growing, creative play along with the
traditional hard-play surfaces. This 'all-weather' outdoor area ensures access is
possible all-year round and with a mini-forest school planned for the future, this will
become a 'natural-haven' within the city. The introduction of our own trasport from September 2009 will see the inclusion of
additional schools in our Before, After and Out of School Clubs. Holiday clubs are
open to all children, whatever school they attend, during all school holidays and for
occasional school closure days.

We've recently updated our visual timetable... You’ll spot BOB on there - our ‘best of both’, combining adult-led activities with plenty of free-flow play.

It’s a simple visual tool that helps the children understand what their day might look like and what’s coming next 🙌🏼

We know not every child is drawn to traditional painting, so this activity brought in something many of them already love - cars! 🚗🎨

If you read just one book a day with your child from birth, by their fifth birthday you’ll have shared around 1,825 books together 📚

And when you add in all the stories, rhymes and books we share every day at nursery too, that figure can very quickly become OVER 2,000! 😲

But it’s about much more than the number. Every story helps build vocabulary, listening and attention, imagination, understanding and familiarity with books and print - all long before a child is expected to read the words themselves.

So yes, sometimes it might look like ‘just reading a book’ … but there’s an awful lot happening behind those pages 🫶

Patterns are everywhere... 🍃

Using leaves, sticks and stones from around us, the children had a go at copying and creating simple patterns while exploring words such as ‘next to’, ‘underneath’, ‘more’ and ‘less’.

A simple activity with lots of learning behind it 🌿

Using tongs to pick up and move the different natural resources helps strengthen the children’s pincer grip - an important early skill for things like holding pencils, fastening clothes and using cutlery.

Along the way, we’ve also been chatting about the different colours and shapes we can spot 👀

Getting ready for a new term means revisiting our Golden Rules ✨

Each week, we’ll focus on one rule with the children, helping them understand what it means and how we can use it in everyday situations.

They’re also lovely to use at home too, so keep an eye out for our Golden Rule of the week 🫶🏼

Are we already moving into Autumn... 🫣 After chatting about the changing weather and the colours we’ll soon start to see in the garden, the children explored orange playdough alongside pinecones, shells and other natural resources - pressing, rolling and making their own marks 🍂

Before children begin forming letters, there are lots of smaller skills developing first ✍🏼

Drawing activities like this invite children to look closely at natural resources, talk about what they can see and then have a go at representing them on paper.

It might look like a simple set-up, but it supports so much at once... strengthening the small muscles in their hands, developing fine motor control, encouraging observation and rich language, and building the foundations for confident early writing 💪🏼
