Withholding can happen at any stage of a child’s toilet journey — before potty training, during it, or long after they’re considered “trained.” It can feel confusing, stressful, and incredibly isolating for parents trying to help their child.

My consultations are designed to help you understand why your child is withholding, reduce fear and anxiety around pooing, and give you practical, supportive strategies that actually work in real life. 💙

If you’re feeling stuck, frustrated, or unsure where to start, support is available.

One of the hardest parts of supporting a child with stool withholding is how misunderstood it can feel 🤍

You become used to explaining that this isn’t just a child “being stubborn” or needing a reminder to sit on the toilet. Meanwhile you’re also listening to endless suggestions about more water, more fruit, prunes, exercise, or “just stopping nappies.”

Most parents supporting a withholder have already tried ALL of those things.

Stool withholding is often a complex cycle involving fear, pain, anxiety, body signals, learned behaviours and muscle patterns. It can feel exhausting constantly trying to explain that to people who thankfully have never had to experience it themselves.

Who can relate?! 👀

If you’re navigating this right now, you’ve got a community here that truly understands 🤍 You are definitely not the only family going through it.

POV: Your child finally poos after days of withholding and you briefly consider framing it as a family milestone 😂💩

If you know, you KNOW. Parents of children who withhold quickly learn that toileting wins can feel bigger than major life events 🙈

Behind the humour, stool withholding can be really stressful for children and parents alike — which is why understanding the physical and psychological side is so important.

If you’re currently navigating toileting struggles, check out the highlights section on my page where I break down the key parts of stool withholding and common toileting challenges 🤍

You’ll find practical strategies for everything from toilet and potty refusal, pooing in nappies, withholding, and bum squeezes — all explained with a sprinkle of psychology to help make behaviours make sense for both parents and children.

Can you relate to this? 💩😅

The crossed legs.
The stiff walking.
The hiding behind the sofa.
The standing on tiptoes.
The sudden refusal to sit down.
All while insisting they “don’t need a poo” 🙃

These are actually really common signs of stool withholding that many parents don’t realise are linked to constipation and fear of pooing.

💩 Stool withholding isn’t always obvious.
It can look like:
⚠️ Hiding to poo
⚠️ Crossing legs or tiptoe standing
⚠️ Constant “holding” positions
⚠️ Small frequent poos or skid marks
⚠️ Fear of the toilet
⚠️ Meltdowns around toileting
⚠️ Saying “I don’t need a poo” for days

For many children, withholding isn’t just physical — it becomes emotional too. Fear, anxiety, loss of confidence and past painful experiences can all keep the cycle going.

That’s why supporting stool withholding isn’t only about getting the poo out. It’s about helping children feel safe, understood and back in control of their body 💛

When we focus on the psychological side alongside the physical treatment, we can reduce shame, build confidence and create healthier long-term toileting habits.

You’re not “failing” if your child is struggling — withholding is incredibly common, and with the right support, things can improve 🌈
