The UK government is proposing to increase the £6,000 baseline funding that mainstream schools receive for each pupil with special educational needs (SEND). This amount has lost over half its value due to inflation since 2013.
The proposed changes aim to
✅ Reduce the long wait for Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) funding, which currently can take up to 20 weeks.
✅ Provide schools with upfront budgets instead of relying on slow top-ups.
✅ Decrease the need for EHCPs for students with moderate needs.
✅ Transition some children to Individual Support Plans (ISPs).
✅ Encourage more mainstream schools to accept SEND pupils.
