Here are some hydration tips from to help you keep your voice working efficiently in this hot weather!

1. Singers experience more water loss from their vocal folds than the average person due to high-intensity vibration, so it’s important to keep your hydration topped up! As a rule of thumb, singers need to be drinking an extra 150ml of water an hour compared to the average person, to account for this loss and to keep your vocal fold tissue healthy and your vocal fold mucus thin!

2. Drinking water is a form of systemic hydration which means it needs to be processed through the digestive system first which can take up to 4 hours before it reaches your vocal folds and structures within the larynx. For a quick hit of direct hydration to the vocal folds you can use a vocal nebuliser with 0.9% saline solution. The saline is important! Normal water won’t work as the solute (salt) concentration isn’t the same as inside your cells. 0.9% saline only!!!

3. You don’t just have to drink water to get your daily water intake. Eating fruit and vegetables, drinking other types of beverages and even eating ice lollies contributes to your daily hydration intake!

4. It’s usually best to drink room temperature water right before singing as ice-cold water can cause the muscles surrounding your larynx to tighten up which makes vocal flexibility harder to achieve.

5. Some medications such as antihistamines can cause your vocal tract to become drier so it’s important to maintain adequate hydration to prevent irritation to the vocal folds whilst singing!
