Our year 2 pupils have been ordering two digit numbers with concrete objects today. Children benefit from using concrete materials in mathematics for several reasons:
Concrete Understanding: Concrete materials, such as blocks, counting beads, or shape manipulatives, provide tangible representations of abstract mathematical concepts. This helps young children grasp and internalise mathematical ideas more easily.
Engagement and Motivation: Hands-on activities with concrete materials make math more engaging and fun for young children. It keeps their interest and motivation high as they interact with physical objects.
Sensory Learning: Young children learn best through their senses. Concrete materials allow them to touch, see, and manipulate objects, which enhances their sensory learning experience and improves retention of mathematical concepts.

Today, our year 3s have been learning about flexible partitioning using concrete and pictorial methods.
Children need to learn about flexible partitioning of numbers for several reasons:
Understanding Number Relationships: Flexible partitioning helps children understand the relationships between numbers. It allows them to see that numbers can be broken down into different combinations, which is fundamental to number sense.
Problem Solving: It equips children with problem-solving skills, enabling them to approach mathematical problems in various ways. This flexibility in partitioning numbers is essential for tackling different types of math problems.
Mental Maths: Flexible partitioning aids in mental math. Being able to break numbers into parts mentally makes arithmetic calculations easier and quicker.
