Is your child ready for Year 5 or simply moving up to Year 5? 👀📚

Year 5 brings more independence, greater depth and higher expectations. Children are expected to tackle more challenging texts, explain their thinking and communicate their ideas with increasing confidence.

That’s why the foundations built in Year 4 matter so much. ✨

➕ Times tables: Moving from counting and calculating to quick, confident recall.

📖 Reading: Going beyond finding the answer to explaining meaning, making inferences and understanding the author’s choices.

✍️ Writing: Moving from getting ideas onto the page to structuring purposeful paragraphs, choosing vocabulary carefully and writing for effect.

🧠 Problem-solving: Becoming more confident at applying knowledge independently and explaining how they reached an answer.

These skills might seem small, but together they make a big difference to confidence, progress and readiness for Year 5.

A high-quality 11+ creative writing piece isn’t about trying to impress with complicated vocabulary. It’s about using language purposefully to create a story that captures the reader’s attention and leaves an impression. ✨

A strong piece should include:

📖 A clear, engaging storyline with a beginning, development and satisfying ending.
💡 Original ideas, something that makes your writing stand out.
📝 Well-structured paragraphs, each one moving the story forward.

🎒✨ 5 THINGS TO DO NOW TO GET YOUR CHILD SEPTEMBER-READY 👍

The countdown to September is officially on! ⏰

After weeks of late mornings, relaxed routines and plenty of fun, the return to school can feel like a BIG adjustment for children.

But you don’t need to turn the final weeks of summer into a classroom. Instead, use this time to gently reset routines, rebuild confidence and prepare your child for a positive start. ❤️

Here are 5 things you can start doing NOW:

1️⃣ Reset their sleep routine:
Gradually bring bedtime and wake-up times back towards their school routine. Being well-rested can make a huge difference to concentration, mood and learning.

2️⃣ Make reading part of the day again:
Just 15–20 minutes of reading each day can help rebuild focus, develop vocabulary and get their brain back into learning mode.

3️⃣ Revisit the basics without the pressure:
Keep key skills ticking over with a few times tables, spellings, mental maths questions or a little writing. Short and consistent bursts of learning work best.

4️⃣ Build independence:
Encourage your child to take responsibility for simple tasks such as: organising their belongings, getting dressed, preparing their school bag or remembering what they need. These little habits also increase a child's confidence.

5️⃣ Start talking about school positively:
Ask: “What are you looking forward to?” rather than focusing only on what might be difficult. Talk about new opportunities, friends, teachers and the things they enjoy about learning.

📚 English Tip of the Day: Metaphors

✨ What is a metaphor?

A metaphor is a figurative language technique that compares two things by saying one thing is another. Metaphors help writers create strong mental images and make their writing more vivid and expressive.

Instead of writing:
❌ The classroom was very noisy.

You could write:
✅ “The classroom was a zoo.”

This doesn’t mean the classroom was literally a zoo! It suggests that the classroom was wild, noisy, and full of activity.
