It's graduation week at the University of Durham. Crowds of happy and proud parents and their young people gathered at Durham Cathedral for the ceremony.
This young man didn't go to grammar school. He attended an ordinary secondary school in Birmingham, where his talent for maths was noticed and nourished. He was supported and encouraged in school and at home, and he applied himself to his learning.
He graduated on Wednesday with a first class Masters degree.
Grammar school is fabulous for some pupils. Non-grammar schools are fabulous for others. What matters is the the child is understood and treated as an individual.

If you're lucky this week, you might catch a glimpse of Tas, who is back in Brum after passing year two of medical training in London. Well done, Tas!

My son, now aged 28, lost a classmate when they were both 13. Dylan was a very strong swimmer but even so, when he went swimming in a local pool one very hot day, he drowned.
Don't let it happen to your child.

It's pretty hot out there but the centre stays quite cool. We're open to welcome our pupils as usual.
Please send them with water rather than sweet or fizzy drinks.
Let them change out of uniform if they can, into cooler, loose- fitting clothes.
See you soon!
