🎓 One Cheltenham primary school stopped grouping SEN pupils by age and started grouping them by stage of need instead.

Headteacher Caroline Parker built a model where pupils follow the pathway that fits them, while still joining classmates their own age for the lessons, trips and social moments they can access. Real support, without losing their place in the community.

The mantra behind it all? Stage, not age.

And the results speak for themselves: attendance climbing from 30% to 80% for some children, with up to two years' progress made in just six months.

School leaders trying to make SEN provision more flexible: this is the episode for you. 👀

🎓 At one Cheltenham primary school, SEN pupils aren't grouped by the year they were born, they're grouped by their stage of need.

Pupils stay on the pathway that best matches their needs, but Caroline Parker, the school's Headteacher, designed it so they still join their chronological-age peers for the subjects, trips and social time they can access. Getting bespoke support exactly where they need it, without losing their sense of belonging.

The mantra behind it all? Stage, not age.

The impact has been huge. Attendance is up from 30% to 80% for some pupils, and children making up to two years of progress in just six months.

If you're a school leader still figuring out how to make SEN provision genuinely flexible, you need to hear how she did it. 👀
