First day in grammar school after passing the 11+.

One of our Jedon11Plus parents told me about her son's first day in grammar school today..."Oh he was buzzing, he was buzzing! He was like mom I made it through!"

This is exactly what I tell every parent - the pride is ours as parents, but the achievement belongs to them. If you are still in the 11+ journey, keep going. That first day in September makes it all worth it.

Many families I speak to tell me they left an Open Day feeling more confused than when they arrived. Or they don't really know how to prepare for it.

It’s usually because they made one of these 3 mistakes:

*1. Only attending the polished evening talk.* The real culture of a grammar school is seen on a normal school morning - how staff speak to children in corridors, how lessons feel.

*2. Not asking about pastoral care.* A brilliant academic record means little if your child doesn’t feel happy and supported.

*3. Forgetting to ask the students ( especially younger ones) themselves.* The Year 7 tour guides will give you the most honest answer you’ll get all day.

An Open Day is not just about looking around - it’s about knowing what to look for.

Today, thousands walked into the 11+ hall. This was my younger son in the line with the black and white backpack, waiting his turn.

After the exam, he came out and said: "Mummy, I remembered what you told me — get straight into the questions without fluff. I did just that. I couldn't wait to pour out all I knew without distraction."

Four years prior, my older son after his own exam had said: "Was that the real deal? It felt so familiar" because of the mock tests.

Two lessons: Familiarity removes fear. Strategy removes distraction.

This comment stopped me in my tracks last night:

"It wasn't getting from the teachers that mattered. It was getting from parents like yourselves."

That's why we do these lives. The 11+ isn't just a curriculum - it's an experience. And no one understands it like a parent who's been through it.
