Get involved in our Epilepsy in pregnancy quality improvement project!
Epilepsy is the second highest reason for mothers dying during pregnancy or after childbirth in the UK. The two main reasons for poor outcomes in pregnant women with epilepsy and their babies are (1) a lack of recognition of high-risk status of pregnant women with epilepsy by healthcare professionals, (2) women’s non-adherence to seizure medication due to concerns about the long-term effect of the drugs on their babies.
Our recently funded NIHR programme grant (Epi-Safe) will develop a personalised care package to predict and prevent seizures in pregnant women with epilepsy. We will also study the long-term effect of seizure medication on the development of children to inform pregnant women and ensure correct use of their seizure medication.
This quality improvement (QI) project is an important first step of the Epi-Safe programme. The QI project will map the characteristics, outcomes, and type of care, received by pregnant women with epilepsy. This will inform the development and design of the Epi-Safe care bundle.
